Italian newspaper launches AI-led edition

Italy's Il foglio newspaper has pioneered the publishing of a special edition, in which all content is created by artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the Guardian, this special edition consists of four pages, issued in large format and appeared on newspapers as well as online versions from March 18.

Il foglios Editor Claudio Cerasa said that humanss role in this process is limited to placing commands for AI and reading the answers. This is part of the newspaper's one-month-long experiment to assess the impact of AI on the press industry as well as daily life.

The experience takes place in the context that many news agencies around the world are looking for ways to apply AI to their work. Recently, BBC News also announced that it will use AI to personalize news content for readers.

The first issue of Il foglio AI focuses on political and economic topics. The first page published an article about US President Donald Trump, analyzing the views of his supporters in Italy. In addition, there is a section related to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Another article in this series gave an optimistic assessment of the Italian economy, based on the latest report from the Istat national statistics agency on income and wages.

The second page of the newspaper focuses on social issues, with an article discussing the complexity of relationships between love and friendship, and at the same time mentioning the trend of young Europeans increasingly moving away from stable relationships.

The articles in Il foglio AI are presented clearly, concurately and without significant grammatical errors. However, no article directly cited personal or expert words.

The last page of the special issue of the newspaper posted AI-generated letters to the editors. One of them questioned whether AI will make humans "useless" in the future. The AI humorously replied: AI is a great initiative, but it still doesnt know how to order a cup of coffee without mistaking the sugar.

Editor Claudio Cerasa of the newspaper emphasized that Il foglio AI is a hands-on test to assess the ability of AI in the field of journalism, as well as the impact of this technology on print newspaper publishing. Its just another Il foglio created by intelligence, dont call it artificial, he asserted.
