Ms. Suman Agarwal, founder and nutritionist at Selfcare by Suman (based in India) said that three types of drinks including green tea , coffee and beetroot juice are said to be able to support and reduce the condition of fatty liver disease.
Green tea contains catechins, a compound that may help improve liver function and reduce fat in the liver. Coffee consumption has been linked to lower levels of liver enzymes, which is associated with better health. Beetroot juice contains betaine, which is known to reduce fat accumulation in the liver.
For liver health, according to nutritionist Suman Agarwal, you should drink 2 to 3 cups of coffee or 2 to 3 cups of green tea; one glass of beetroot juice per day. This dosage level is generally safe and can help reduce liver levels, improve liver function and support detoxification.
However, Ms. Suman Agarwal also warned that drinking too much green tea (exceeding the recommended level) can be toxic to the liver, and beetroot juice contains a lot of natural sugar so it is not suitable for some people, especially diabetics.
The betaine content in beets helps support the liver’s ability to process and eliminate fat. Beets also contain nitrates that can improve blood flow, providing better liver support. Suman Agarwal recommends eating beets whole in salads rather than juices due to their lack of fiber and high sugar content.
Sharing the same opinion, Ms. Pooja Palriwala, a nutritionist working in the US, recommends drinking green tea and coffee in the morning and early afternoon to increase alertness, avoid sleep disorders and other side effects.
Also, beets are high in sugar so diabetics should avoid eating them and avoid drinking their juice. Drinking too much green tea and coffee can cause insomnia, acidity, reduced iron absorption and digestive problems.
“Therefore, coffee and green tea should not be consumed on an empty stomach. They should be consumed during or after meals,” Pooja Palriwala noted.
