Things to do and not do when you have a headache

People with headaches should not fast and avoid excessive physical activity. Instead, get enough sleep, drink enough water and reduce stress.

1. Things to do when having a headache

- Get enough sleep: Sleeping too much or too little can trigger a migraine. Sleeping too much can easily cause brain stagnation, while lack of sleep or insomnia puts pressure on the nervous system, causing overload of cerebral blood vessels and leading to headaches. Adults should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. When pain appears suddenly, it is important to stop all work and rest immediately.

- Stay hydrated: Just a mild dehydration can aggravate headache symptoms. Therefore, you should drink at least 2 liters of water per day and increase the amount of water when the weather is hot or when having to work outdoors.

- Monitoring weather changes: Changes in weather are often accompanied by fluctuations in atmospheric pressure. These changes can affect the dilation of blood vessels or have a negative impact on chemicals in the brain, causing headaches.

- Reduces Stress: Continuous anxiety and stress can be serious harm to your health. When faced with stress, take time to relax, temporarily put your work aside and prioritize chatting with friends, eating regularly and getting enough sleep.

2. Things to avoid when having a headache

- Fasting: The habit of eating on time or eating too little will lead to hypoglycemia when hungry. When blood sugar levels decrease, the brain is the first affected organ, causing symptoms such as headache, nausea, exhaustion, and even fainting.

- Exercise too much or too little: Sometimes, high-intensity physical activity can put pressure on the brain, making headaches worse. On the contrary, a sedentary lifestyle can easily cause headaches due to lack of oxygen, poor blood circulation and stiff muscles and joints. People should maintain regular exercise with moderate intensity to improve overall health and prevent headaches.

- Looking at the screen for too long: Sitting in front of a computer or phone for long periods of time causes visual strain. For some people with migraines, eye strain can aggravate symptoms. Prioritize rest, do light physical movements or walk to relax, help blood circulation, thereby preventing severe headaches.

- Smoking: Cigarette smoke causes many health harmful effects. Nicotine, cigarette smoke and secondhand smoke are all known to trigger headaches and cause symptoms to progress severely.
