During a working trip to attend the inauguration ceremony of houses for near-poor households and urge the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses in Can Tho City and Tra Vinh Province in early April 2025, Minister of Ethnic Minorities and Religions Dao Ngoc Dung said that according to statistics, the whole country still has about 500,000 temporary and dilapidated houses.
Minister Dao Ngoc Dung said that the Ministry has reported to the General Secretary and Prime Minister, setting a target of no more temporary or dilapidated houses by 2025. Therefore, eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses is a very big policy of the Party and State, this is a humane policy, with noble significance.
Minister Dao Ngoc Dung also said that Can Tho City is determined to announce the completion of the elimination of all temporary and dilapidated houses by April 25, 2025. Thus, Can Tho will be one of the 8 localities leading the country in implementing this policy.
Reporting to the Minister and the working delegation, Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Duong Tan Hien said that, implementing the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, the city has deployed the construction and repair of 531 houses for poor, near-poor households and policy families with a budget of 27 billion VND.
Up to this point, Can Tho City has completed and handed over 184 apartments. All remaining houses have been started.
According to Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Can Tho City will urgently reduce all efforts, directing the focus to speed up construction and repair progress to promptly hand over houses for people with revolutionary contributions, poor and near-poor households, helping households soon have new, spacious houses and stabilize their lives.
The elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses is an act of profound humanitarian significance, showing gratitude to families of meritorious people, caring for the lives and shelters of poor and near-poor households.

According to information from the Ministry of Ethnic Minorities and Religions, by April 2025, the whole country had supported the demolition of 189,243 temporary and dilapidated houses, of which 92,291 were inaugurated and 96,952 were newly started.
Of the total 189,243 houses mentioned above, 18,024 houses are housing support for people with revolutionary contributions; 64,900 houses are housing support under 2 national target programs and 106,319 houses are housing support under the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses.
From March 29 to April 4 alone, the whole country increased by about 21,000 units (completed and newly built); on average, each locality supported 48 units/day.
Previously, the Government Office issued Notice No. 158/TB-VPCP on the conclusion of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 3rd National Online Meeting of the Steering Committee for the implementation of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide.
The conclusion notice stated that immediately after the 2nd Session, the Government, the Vietnam Fatherland Front and ministries, branches and localities focused on implementing the tasks and solutions set out and achieved some outstanding results such as: Fully issued documents according to their authority to promote the implementation of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide;
Localities have completed the establishment and completion of 3-level steering committees in the locality; localities have mobilized more than VND 2,700 billion; completed and handed over more than 16,000 houses and started construction of more than 18,000 houses.
Implementing the policy of the Party and the State, the direction of the Government and the Prime Minister, the completion of erasing temporary houses and dilapidated houses in 2025 was identified as a particularly important political task of the entire political system, localities, ministries and branches, with the spirit of "only discussing, no backing desk"; Determined to October 31, 2025, basically completed the goal of erasing temporary houses and dilapidated houses nationwide.
