A tropical depression has just formed in the sea area near the East Sea, and is forecast to strengthen into a storm in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, many areas in the East Sea continue to have thunderstorms, tornadoes, strong gusts of wind and high waves, posing a risk of unsafety for ships and tourism activities at sea.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), at 8:00 AM on August 2, the center of the tropical depression was at about 14.9 degrees North latitude; 125.1 degrees East longitude, over the sea east of Luzon Island (Philippines). The tropical depression has winds of level 7 (50-61km/h), gusts of level 9 (75-88km/h) and is moving slowly in the West-Northwest direction.
It is forecasted that by 8 am on August 3, this system may strengthen into a storm, with intensity of level 8, gusts of level 10, before weakening back into a tropical depression.
According to meteorologists, this system is unlikely to pass through Luzon Island to enter the East Sea. The reason is that super typhoon Dolphin is operating in the East with very strong intensity, changing environmental conditions and absorbing some energy, making it difficult for the tropical depression to continue to develop.
Meanwhile, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that during the day and night of August 2, the Gulf of Tonkin, the Gulf of Thailand and the Northern East Sea area (including the Hoang Sa special zone sea area) will have scattered showers and thunderstorms.
In thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, strong gusts of wind at level 7-8, sea waves over 2m high, causing rough seas and affecting the operation of ships and boats. The meteorological agency recommends that vehicles operating in these sea areas should closely monitor weather developments to proactively prevent and avoid.
On land, the North, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An continue to have scattered showers and thunderstorms, common rainfall of 10-30mm, locally over 90mm. Notably, the risk of heavy rain intensity over 70mm in 3 hours increases the risk of localized flooding in urban areas and low-lying areas.
The meteorological agency assesses that this thunderstorm in the North and Thanh Hoa is likely to last for many days to come. In thunderstorms, there may be tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind, affecting production, causing trees to fall, works to be damaged, and potential risks of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.
