Tropical Storm Grant over the Indian Ocean will strengthen to hurricane level this week.

According to the latest storm information from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), on the morning of December 23 (local time), Typhoon Grant was about 339 km east of Cocos Islands. In the past 6 hours, the storm has been moving northwest at a speed of 11 km/h. The largest wave height reached 5.5 m.

Grant is forecast to continue moving northwest along the northeastern edge of the subtropical high pressure trough over the next 36 hours.

In the next 3 days, another subtropical high pressure is forecast to form southeast of Grant. Therefore, Grant will move west-southwest for the remainder of the forecast period.

Grant is expected to strengthen steadily over the next 3 days. By December 26, the strongest winds near the center of the storm reached about 130 km/h, the storm officially strengthened to typhoon level. After that, dry air from the North will penetrate, suppressing the trend of strengthening, the storm will maintain wind intensity of about 130 km/h for the next 5 days.

In the worst case scenario, the storm is forecast to reach its peak intensity with winds of about 175 km/h. Hurricane Grant brought widespread heavy rain to the Cocos Islands.

In the East Sea, according to the Thuy Meteorological Forecast Center, there is little chance of storms/tropical depressions appearing in the next month.

The eastern sea area of the North East Sea will have northeast winds of level 6, sometimes level 7, gusting to level 8-9. Strong seas. Waves are 3.0-6.0m high. At night the wind gradually decreases.

The sea area from Khanh Hoa to Ca Mau and the west of the South East Sea (including the sea area west of Truong Sa area): Northeast wind level 5, sometimes level 6, gusting to level 7. Rough seas. Waves are 2.0-4.0m high.

The Central and South East Sea area (including Truong Sa special zone) will have scattered showers and thunderstorms.During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.

At around the morning of December 25, the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern sea area of the North East Sea will have northeast winds gradually increasing to level 6, gusting to level 7-8, rough seas, waves 3.0-5.0m high, especially in the North of the Gulf of Tonkin 1.5-2.5m.Sea natural disaster risk level: level 2.
