Bangkok Post reported on August 10 that the accident occurred at around 9:20 p.m. (local time) on National Highway 118 in Mae Chedi Mai, near the Khun Chae National Park ranger station.
The truck carrying a large cable coil from Chiang Mai lost control while passing through a steep turn, crashed into the railing and plunged into a ravine about 10 m deep.
Rescue forces from Sawang Wiang Pao Thammasathan Foundation and local police quickly arrived at the scene. The driver, suspected to be the girl's father, was found seriously injured nearby. The woman accompanying her, suspected to be her mother, died on the spot.
A 7-month-old baby girl was stuck in a chair in the cabin of the car. Rescue workers took about 30-40 minutes to crawl open the door and get the child out.
The child did not have serious skin injuries, but panicked and cried continuously.
A representative of the Chiang Rai Disaster Rescue Association at the scene to participate in the rescue said that the baby had miraculously survived when the truck overturned in a deep ravine and crushed cabin.
After receiving first aid, the child was taken to Wiang Pa Pao Hospital for examination, while the father and the mother's body were transferred to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital.
The police determined that the initial cause may be due to the steep curve that caused the vehicle to slide off the road. The case is still under investigation to determine the official cause.
