Typhoon Trami (local name in the Philippines is Kristine) devastated many localities in the Philippines, causing flash floods, landslides and heavy damage in many areas.
Amid severe flooding, a family in Naga City (in the Bicol region, south of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines) was forced to place the coffin of a loved one on the ceiling.
Danice Audrey Abante, a resident of Naga City, said floodwaters in her home had risen to her neck. Her family had no choice but to raise her coffin to the rafters for at least five days, according to the Philippine Star.
Danice's grandmother, Elizabeth, passed away on October 21 at the age of 75, due to heart disease.
“We had no choice, grandma, please understand. Until we say goodbye, you will still be in pain,” Danice shared on social media.
The niece said her grandmother's funeral affected by floods was like "doubling the pain".
Danice posted photos of the coffin resting on the rafters, while her grandfather was also up high guarding his late wife's coffin.
The flood water in the house is still below waist level.
The 24-hour rainfall brought by Typhoon Trami flooded about 30% of Naga City, affecting nearly 70% of the population, according to Mayor Nelson Lagacion.
As of October 25, nine towns in Camarines Sur province, where Naga City is located, remained flooded.
Flash floods swept through the area after Typhoon Trami dumped as much rain in 24 hours as it had in two months combined, combined with high tides that trapped thousands of residents.
Typhoon Trami caused up to 110 million pesos ($1.88 million) in damage to seaports in the Philippines, with some airports slightly damaged.
At least 116 people were killed and 39 are still missing due to the effects of this storm, according to the Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on October 28.
In Vietnam, storm Trami (Vietnamese name: Tra Mi) also caused damage to many central provinces when it made landfall in the area from Thua Thien Hue to Da Nang. Many localities in Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Nam and Da Nang were flooded. At least 3 people died and one person went missing due to floods and accidents while reinforcing houses to avoid the storm.
According to statistics from the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention, storm Tra Mi damaged 290 houses, including 210 in Thua Thien Hue, 18 in Quang Nam, and 62 in Da Nang. Rising sea levels caused landslides along 1,000m of coastline on the border between Phu Thuan commune, Phu Vang district and Thuan An ward, Hue city. Many trees were broken in Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam.
