Young people get used to the "night owl" rhythm of life
For many young people, nighttime becomes a "private" time to complete work, study or entertain. However, the habit of staying up late for a long time is causing many people to fall into sleep deprivation.
Le Minh Anh - a final year student at a university in Hanoi - said that his schedule often ends very late. "My day usually starts around 7 am to be on time for class. In the afternoon, I work part-time at a coffee shop. In the evening, I have time to do homework, prepare for homework or complete personal tasks" - Minh Anh said.
After finishing the shift at about 10 pm, Minh Anh starts sitting at the desk to study. On some days when she has to complete group assignments or make reports, Minh Anh usually stays up until 1-2 am.
It's quiet at night, so I can concentrate more easily. But because I sleep late, I wake up very tired the next morning, many days I have to drink coffee to wake up to go to school," Minh Anh said.
According to Minh Anh, the habit of sleeping late is gradually becoming difficult to change. Even on days not too busy, Minh Anh still finds it difficult to fall asleep early because the biological clock is used to staying up late.
There are times when I want to sleep before 12 o'clock but lie down for a long time and still don't want to sleep. Many times I hold my phone and surf social networks and then wake up late," Minh Anh said.
Similarly, Mr. Dam Hai Nam (Hanoi) also said that staying up late has become a habit since he was a student.
“Initially, it was just staying up late to watch movies or play games with friends. Later, when I went to work, I took advantage of learning more skills or doing personal work in the evening, so my bedtime was usually after 1 am,” Mr. Nam shared.
According to Mr. Nam, although knowing that sleeping late is not good for health, many young people still find it difficult to change because of their busy schedule or nighttime entertainment habits.
Lack of sleep can cause many health consequences
According to MSc.BS Nguyen Khac Dung - Deputy Head of the Clinical Department, Mai Huong Day Mental Hospital, sleep plays a very important role in the activities of the body, especially the brain.
On average, an adult needs to sleep about 7 - 9 hours per day, because sleep not only helps the body rest but also participates in regulating many important functions.
According to doctors, when not getting enough sleep, the body and brain easily fall into a state of fatigue and overload. Gradually, this condition can lead to many disorders both mentally and physically.
Sleep is not simply rest but also helps regulate the activities of the body, especially the activities of the brain. When the brain is not fully rested, the body will easily experience many health problems," said M.Sc. Dr. Nguyen Khac Dung.
According to doctors, many students often try to stay up late to study more, especially during the exam preparation period. However, if they do not sleep enough, the amount of knowledge they receive is also difficult to retain for a long time.
Not only affecting memory, prolonged insomnia can also cause many other health problems such as psychological disorders, skin and endocrine effects, and even increase the risk of cardiovascular, blood pressure and blood sugar-related diseases," the doctor said.
Doctors recommend that to protect health, young people should adjust their living habits and prioritize sleep. You should try to go to bed before 11 pm so that your body has time to rest and recover better.
