On Tet, fresh flower vases such as peach blossoms, apricot blossoms, chrysanthemums or lilies not only beautify the space but also carry the meaning of luck and prosperity. However, for flowers to maintain their freshness throughout many spring days, proper care is a key factor. Many international gardening experts and reputable organizations have issued scientific recommendations to help extend the lifespan of flower arrangements.
Below are tips compiled from the instructions of the Royal Horticultural Society (UK), the life section of The New York Times and the gardening section of Better Homes & Gardens.
1. Cut the base of the flower correctly
According to the Royal Horticultural Society, cutting the flower base diagonally at about 45 degrees helps increase water absorption area and limit drainage blockages. You should use a sharp knife or scissors and cut the base again every 1-2 days.
In addition, you should cut the roots under the light flowing water to prevent air bubbles from entering the stem - the reason why flowers wither quickly.
2. Keep the tank and water clean
Better Homes & Gardens recommends changing the water daily and washing the vase with mild soap to limit bacteria. Waterborne bacteria are one of the main reasons for stem rot and early pear dropping.
Water should be at room temperature, not too cold or too hot to avoid causing "shock" to the flowers.
3. Use flower care solution
According to instructions compiled by The New York Times from flower arranging experts, the flower care package included when buying flowers has the effect of providing nutritional sugar and antibacterial substances.
If not available, a simple solution can be prepared including:
- 1 teaspoon sugar.
- A few drops of lemon juice or vinegar.
- A small amount of bleach (very little) to kill bacteria.
However, it is necessary to dilute it in the correct ratio to avoid spoiling the flowers.
4. Avoid high temperatures and direct sunlight
International gardening experts all emphasize that cool temperatures help flowers stay fresh longer. During Tet days, flower vases should be placed in a ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, stoves or heating devices.
At night, if possible, place flowers in a cooler area of the house to extend their lifespan.
5. Remove waterlogged leaves
Leaves submerged in water will decompose quickly, creating an environment for bacteria to grow. Therefore, prune all the leaves below the water level before planting.
Advice for Vietnamese Tet flowers
For popular Tet flowers such as chrysanthemums, lilies, gerberas or tulips, the above principles are all applied effectively. Especially for peach and apricot blossoms - which are often displayed with branches - it is necessary to change the water regularly and cut back the roots when you see that the ends of the branches show signs of dryness.
Taking care of flowers properly not only helps save costs but also maintains a fresh spring atmosphere throughout the first days of the year. A brilliant vase of flowers will contribute to bringing a warm and fulfilling feeling to the whole family during Tet.
