Bac Ninh is known as the province with the smallest area in Vietnam with 822.70 km2, the 22nd most populous in the country with nearly 1.5 million people.
According to the plan approved by the Prime Minister until 2030, Bac Ninh strives to have 4 cities including Bac Ninh, Tu Son, Tien Du, Yen Phong.
Currently, Bac Ninh province has 8 administrative units: 2 cities are Bac Ninh and Tu Son, 2 towns are Que Vo and Thuan Thanh, 4 districts are Tien Du, Yen Phong, Gia Binh, Luong Tai.

According to the Bac Ninh Provincial Electronic Information Portal, the ancient family land was called Kinh Bac. During the Nguyen Dynasty in 1823, this place was named Bac Ninh Town and changed to Bac Ninh Province in 1831. From now on, Bac Ninh will officially be on the map according to administrative units as a province of Vietnam with 21 districts, an area of about 6,000 km2.
In 1895, the French colonialists divided Bac Ninh into two provinces, Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, taking the Cau River as their border. After the August 1945 Revolution, Bac Ninh was adjusted to facilitate management.

In January 2021, Gia Lam district and some communes of Thuan Thanh, Tien Du, and Tu Son districts were transferred to Hanoi. In March 6, some communes of Tien Du district moved to Gia Lam (Hanoi), some communes of Tu Son moved to Dong Anh (Hanoi).
In 1963, Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces merged into Ha Bac province. By January 1, 1997, Hebei province was divided into the two provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang as before. Bac Ninh was officially re-established, becoming the province with the smallest area in Vietnam.
In August 1999, Tien Son district was separated into Tien Du and Tu Son districts. After 1 month, Gia Luong district was separated into Gia Binh district and Luong Tai district. In 2008, Tu Son district was upgraded to Tu Son town and in 2017, Bac Ninh city was recognized as a class I urban area.
Currently, Bac Ninh has nearly 20 industrial parks, an attractive destination for many domestic and foreign investors. Bac Ninh has important traffic routes running through, connecting to the economic, commercial and cultural centers of the North.
National Highway 1A connects Hanoi - Bac Ninh - Lang Son, National Highway 18 expressway connects Noi Bai - Bac Ninh - Ha Long International Airport, National Highway 38 connects Bac Ninh - Hai Duong - Hai Phong, the railway axis across Vietnam to Lang Son and China.
Bac Ninh also has a network of waterways of Cau River, Duong River, and Thai Binh River flowing into the East Sea. These are favorable conditions for Bac Ninh to develop its economy, culture, society and exchange with the outside world.
