Innovation in university admissions needs to be towards transparency and efficiency

All changes in admission work directly affect the rights of candidates, so they need to be carefully considered to both expand opportunities and ensure fairness.

Students' thoughts

At the recent 2025 Higher Education Conference, the Ministry of Education and Training asked for opinions from higher education institutions on two contents for the next year's admission season: Eliminate the consideration of high school transcripts and control the number of applications.

Sharing his perspective on the content of eliminating high school transcripts, Vu Bao Anh - a 12th grade student in Hanoi - said that reducing one method means reducing one opportunity. In particular, those who have long prepared for high school transcripts and invested in a comprehensive learning process for 3 years of high school will suffer many disadvantages. This could also create more pressure as all expectations are focused on a few remaining roads, instead of having the same safety option as before.

The most reasonable way is to adjust this method, such as combining considering academic records with scores for a separate exam, or with an international language certificate such as IELTS. This approach both expands opportunities and ensures fairness" - Bao Anh expressed his opinion.

Regarding the content of controlling the number of applications, many students think this is necessary to avoid waste. Limiting wishes also forces candidates to consider more carefully, clearly identify occupations and schools that are suitable for their abilities and conditions, thereby registering more seriously and responsibly.

"This also contributes to making the admission process transparent, reducing virtual situations in admission, causing many difficulties for universities like in previous years" - Nhu Quynh - a 12th grade student in Thanh Hoa said.

Need to aim for fairness

Adhering to teaching every day, accompanying students throughout the orientation and preparation process for exams, Ms. Nguyen Phuong Linh - a teacher at Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted (Phu Tho) - believes that eliminating the form of considering transcripts can help make enrollment more fair, limiting the situation of "abusing beautiful scores". However, if they completely drop out, students in many disadvantaged localities will lose a chance to attend university.

According to Ms. Linh, to balance fairness and opportunity, it is possible to maintain the method of considering academic records but only account for a limited proportion of the total target. At the same time, it is necessary to tighten the inspection process and compare results to minimize the situation of raising scores. In addition, schools can combine considering transcripts with accompanying conditions, both reflecting the learning process and ensuring objectivity in enrollment.

Regarding the limitation of the number of university admission wishes, Dr. Vu Thu Huong - former lecturer at Hanoi National University of Education expressed her agreement.

According to Dr. Huong, limiting wishes is not to reduce opportunities but to help students consider more carefully before choosing a career, avoiding the situation of studying for a while and then quitting or changing careers after graduation. This also supports educational institutions in finding students in line with training orientation.

"Innovation in admission needs to be towards fairness, transparency and efficiency, while creating opportunities for students to choose the right career. Changes in admission based on academic records or wish limitations, if implemented properly, will benefit both candidates and training institutions - Dr. Huong emphasized.
