The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training requests schools to strengthen prevention measures and early detection of unsafe risks after the incident at Thanh An Secondary and High School.

On the evening of September 7, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training (GDĐT) informed about the incident at Thanh An Secondary and High School, and at the same time requested educational institutions to strengthen measures to ensure school safety, school counseling and social work.

According to the school's initial report, at about 6:35 am on September 4, 2026, before class, in the student toilet area of Thanh An Secondary and High School, a 7th grade student used a sharp object to injure 5 other students.

The student who caused the incident is subject to the school's special attention and support in education. Currently, specialized agencies are coordinating to fully assess the health and psychological condition to have an official conclusion.

Immediately after discovering the incident, security forces and school staff approached, intervened, controlled the situation; gave first aid and took the injured students to medical facilities. After that, the children were transferred to Children's Hospital 2 and Tu Du Hospital facility 2 for further treatment.

The school also coordinated with Thanh An Commune Police and relevant forces to verify and clarify the incident.

According to updated information as of September 6, the health of the injured students is basically stable. One student has been discharged from the hospital, and the remaining students continue to be monitored and treated at a medical facility.

No conclusion on the cause, psychological state of students

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training determined that this is a serious school safety incident. This agency is coordinating with the Police, local authorities and related units to fully verify the developments, causes and related factors.

The Department requests that the review and handling process must be objective, cautious, and within its authority; do not conclude on the cause or psychological state of students when there are no professional verification and evaluation results.

The responsibilities of relevant organizations and individuals will be considered based on the results of official verification, ensuring no evasion of responsibility, while protecting the legitimate rights and interests of children.

On September 4 and 6, representatives of the Department of Education and Training directly visited the medical facility to inquire about the injured students and share with their families.

The school is required to assign officials to closely monitor the health status of the students, proactively coordinate with medical facilities and families to provide timely support. Psychological counseling activities are also being implemented for injured students, those who directly witnessed and students affected psychologically by the incident.

Homeroom teachers continue to monitor students; subject teachers guide exercises, ensuring that students' learning is not interrupted during treatment.

Increase monitoring of toilets, corridors and hidden areas

After the incident, the Department of Education and Training requested educational institutions in Ho Chi Minh City to review plans to ensure security and safety; strengthen duty and supervision at school gates, corridors, stairs, toilets, areas out of sight as well as times where conflicts are likely to arise.

Schools must take appropriate measures to promptly detect and prevent bringing sharp objects, weapons or items that may cause danger into the school.

Homeroom teachers, subject teachers, School Counseling Groups and social workers are responsible for early identification of notable changes in students' emotions, behaviors and friendships; coordinate with families, medical facilities and specialized units when necessary.

Access and support for students must ensure the principles of respect, confidentiality, no prejudice, no discrimination and no increased harm.

The Department of Education and Training also requests to strengthen coordination between schools, families, local authorities and functional forces; strictly manage images, data and personal information of students, and limit the spread of unverified information.
