Turning around the main curriculum, extra classes
After finishing the Math class, Nguyen Minh Trung (a student of class 9A7 at Yen Hoa Secondary School) rushed to move to another center to practice the Literature exam. 2025 is the first year of applying the exam according to the new general education program, so Minh Trung cannot help but worry about the pressure. During this time, Minh Trung spends about 5 hours a day studying at school, the rest will be extra time studying at centers and self-study at home.
Although teachers have taught him the knowledge well in class, Minh Trung still goes to the exam preparation centers to practice many types of subjects and gain more confidence before entering the important exam. During the time the water receded, 3 months before the exam, in addition to studying in class, many students went to exam preparation centers in the hope of improving their scores in this important exam.
Nguyen Truong Tuong Anh (M.V. Lomonosov Secondary and High School) said that although teachers have provided him with full skills to do research according to textbooks in class, because this year he will take the exam according to the new general education program, he still looks for the exam preparation center.
"Practiceing many types of questions at the exam centers helps me feel a little more confident in consolidating my knowledge. In addition to studying in class, most of my time is spent studying at the center and then returning home to study by myself. Although most of my current time is spent studying, I think this will help me get the best results in the upcoming exam" - Tuong Anh said.
According to the reporter's records, during this period, at many centers, the exam preparation sessions for grade 9 students preparing for grade 10 were almost full. According to Ms. Nguyen Minh Hue - Deputy Director of Cuong Phat Education Center, during this time, the number of students coming to the center has increased compared to previous years. Therefore, the number of practice sessions for students from grade 9 to grade 10 at this center has also increased slightly, about 5 sessions/week and all are full.
Central education is not enough
According to the Hanoi People's Committee, this year the whole city of Hanoi has about 127,000 students considering graduating from junior high school. Of which, public high schools are expected to enroll about 79,000 students, meaning that only about 60% of students have the opportunity to get a ticket to public schools.
Therefore, it is understandable that candidates put all their time and effort into studying, including going to exam preparation centers. However, that is not enough, because the general education program focuses on students' skills and creativity rather than simply learning knowledge in textbooks.
"When there is time for review centers, the students will be trained in thinking ability, problem-solving skills or reflex ability through practicing different levels. However, studying at the center cannot replace learning in class and especially self-study of students. With the new exam, the knowledge passed down by teachers is only the foundation, students need to know how to apply skills to solve problems", Dr. Pham Huu Cuong - teacher of the Learning Education System always advised.
In addition, Dr. Pham Huu Cuong also noted that the Literature exam will not use language materials in textbooks. Therefore, during the learning process in class or in the center, candidates should proactively find an effective learning method to master the skills and methods of reading comprehension, writing literary arguments or social arguments.
Because the method of calculating the admission scores for grade 10 in all three subjects does not multiply the coefficient, studying all 3 subjects is very necessary for candidates to have the best scores.
The Hanoi 10th grade exam will take place on June 7-8 with 3 subjects: Math (120 minutes), Literature (120 minutes) and Foreign Language (60 minutes). Candidates register to take the exam in one of the following languages: English, French, German, Japanese and Korean. Candidates are allowed to register for a foreign language test other than the foreign language they are studying in at secondary schools.
