Remove the title of advanced student
In the 2024-2025 school year, the entire education sector will synchronously deploy the new curriculum and new textbooks for all classes.
Thus, Circular No. 26/2020/TT-BGDDT amending and supplementing the Regulations on assessment and classification of junior high school and high school students issued together with Circular No. 58/2011/TT-BGDDT dated December 12, 2011 is no longer effective. Accordingly, the assessment and classification of students is carried out according to the instructions of Circular No. 22/2021/TT-BGDDT issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.
Tran Quoc Hung, a 10th grader at Chu Van An High School (Hanoi), said that in his curriculum, Physical Education, National Defense Education, and Practical Experience will be evaluated at 2 levels: pass and fail. The remaining subjects will be evaluated based on scores from learning activities such as written tests, presentations, and products, and then evaluated at 4 levels: Good, Fair, Pass, and Fail.
"The rating of not yet achieved instead of weak or poor also makes the classification easier, students do not feel self-conscious about their poor performance" - Quoc Hung said.
Not only has there been a change in the academic ranking, but from this school year, the academic title of middle school and high school students will no longer include the title of advanced student.
Next, students are also rewarded by the school principal when they have outstanding achievements in training and studying during the school year. Or, students with special achievements are considered by the school and recommended for rewards by superiors.
Towards substantive education
The removal of the 5-level classification of academic performance: Excellent, Good, Average, Weak, Poor and replacing it with the 4-level assessment of learning outcomes: Good, Good, Achieved, and Unachieved has been highly appreciated by many teachers.
Ms. Tran Thi Tho - teacher at Hoang Van Thu High School (Hanoi) said: "Evaluating students according to the levels: Excellent, Good and Pass helps encourage students to make more efforts. Although it is a title, with the assessment method according to the new Circular, students will feel satisfied and happy with the results they have achieved, not as heavy as the previous average or poor rankings - which easily caused psychological pressure".
A bright spot in Circular 22 is that students who are assessed as having good academic performance must achieve a score of 8 in at least 6 subjects out of a total of 8 subjects with scores, regardless of the subject, and the remaining subjects must not be less than 6.5 points.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen - teacher at Tho An Secondary School (Hanoi), this regulation will limit the situation of lopsided learning, aiming at comprehensive development for students.
“Previously, assessment mainly focused on Math and Literature, which were considered the most important subjects, followed by English. But now, with the new assessment method, all subjects have become important, meaning that students are forced to study them all to achieve the desired academic title.
This also means that the standards for evaluating student output will be improved and selected more carefully," Ms. Huyen acknowledged.
Regarding the issue of rewards, Ms. Luong Thi Trang - Phu Tien Secondary School (Thai Nguyen) said - only excellent and talented students are rewarded, which also makes students and parents worried.
The new circular aims to comprehensively develop students' abilities, so only truly excellent students will receive certificates of merit to ensure real learning and real results.
However, there are still some unfortunate cases. Many students have tried hard all year, but their academic results are just a little short of the reward, making them feel regretful and discouraged.
"According to the regulations, there are no rewards, but to encourage and motivate students, classes will proactively give rewards from the fund contributed by parents, the only difference is that there are no certificates of merit," said Ms. Trang.
