On November 15, on behalf of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long signed a decision to convert the National Economics University into the National Economics University.
The Government requests the National Economics University to reorganize its organizational structure and operations on the basis of the National Economics University in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Higher Education and relevant legal provisions.
The University Council, the Chairman of the University Council, and the Principal of the National Economics University shall continue to perform their functions, duties, and powers in accordance with current regulations until the Minister of Education and Training decides to establish the University Council, recognize the Chairman of the University Council, and recognize the Director of the National Economics University in accordance with the provisions of law.
With this decision, the National Economics University becomes the 9th university in Vietnam. The other 8 universities include: Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, and Duy Tan University.
Previously, the National Economics University Council passed a resolution to establish three schools including the School of Business, School of Technology, and School of Economics and Public Administration.
The National Economics University currently has about 25,000 full-time students and more than 1,200 staff and lecturers. The number of undergraduate training majors is 60, and 28 doctoral training majors. In the development strategy for the period 2021 - 2030, the school aims to be in the top 5 universities in Vietnam.
According to the Law on Higher Education 2018, university and college are two different concepts. A university is an institution that trains many majors but not many fields. While a university will train in many fields, each field has many majors. Therefore, university will include universities.
According to Decree 99/2019/ND-CP detailing and guiding the implementation of a number of articles of the Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Higher Education, to be transferred from a university to a university, schools must meet the following conditions:
- The university has been recognized as meeting the quality standards of higher education institutions by a legitimate educational quality assessment organization.
- There are at least three schools of the university established according to regulations; there are at least 10 training majors up to doctoral level; there is a regular training scale of over 15,000 people.
- Have the approval of the direct management agency for public universities; have the consensus of investors representing at least 75% of the total contributed capital for private universities and non-profit private universities.
