In late November, the weather in Quang Tri has stabilized after a long period of flooding. At the construction site of the Quang Tri Airport Project (Quang Tri Airport Construction Investment Project), workers and many types of machinery are working continuously to compensate for the progress after the construction was stopped due to floods.
For the runway item, Mr. Bui Van Toan, construction manager of Cienco4 Group, said that the unit is spreading crushed stone against the top layer, preparing to test the spraying of cement concrete. The 2.4km long, 45m wide runway is currently about 20% complete and is expected to be completed before April 30, 2026.
"The unit has arranged many construction teams and mobilized more vehicles to compensate for the interruption caused by floods" - Mr. Toan said.
Some locations on the runway have not been cleared, the contractor is taking advantage of the construction of the handed-over part such as drilling cement stones for weak foundation treatment. In the core area of the runway, there is still a church and a house that cannot be relocated because the locality has not completed resettlement.
In parallel with the runway, the units also focus on the construction of terminals, air traffic control towers and other technical items. The atmosphere at the construction site these days is urgent when the weather is favorable again.
Mr. Le Van Thong - Chairman of Cua Viet Commune People's Committee said that the locality has made efforts to hand over the site to serve the project. However, there are still 32 households that have not been resettled and more than 200 graves that have not been relocated.
"The Provincial People's Committee has agreed on the policy, the locality is urgently constructing the resettlement area to soon complete site clearance" - Mr. Thong said.
It is known that Quang Tri airport is being implemented under the PPP form with a total investment of about 5,800 billion VND, built in Cua Viet and Gio Linh communes. The airport is designed according to ICAO's 4C standard, capable of operating wide-body aircraft and performing level II military functions. In the first phase, the airport is expected to serve 5 million passengers per year. Up to now, Quang Tri province has handed over 245 hectares of land, and about 20 hectares of land are still stuck and need to be resolved.
Currently, some items of the airport project have been completed, including the aircraft parking lot and some connecting roads.
During the inspection on July 26, 2025, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested to speed up the progress of phase 1, and definitely complete the entire project by mid-2026. The Prime Minister also assigned the task of researching and developing the space around the airport into an aviation industrial park, airport urban area, high-tech industry; at the same time, perfecting the connecting infrastructure system to create momentum for regional development and expand connections with Laos and Thailand.
