On the morning of August 20, the line of cars inched through two fences about more than 100 meters long on the Thang Long Avenue frontage road (the entrance to the Me Tri overpass, Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi).
The fence is about 2 m high and 6-7 m wide, erected to serve the construction of water supply pipe excavation.
The remaining road for vehicles is only about 10 m. The vehicles followed each other very slowly, sometimes having to stop completely. During rush hour, adults and children are tired of traffic jams .
The Thang Long Avenue frontage road towards the city center has a very large number of vehicles passing through, so the barrier creates a "bottleneck", causing local congestion.
Many motorcyclists have braved the dangers of going in the opposite direction or entering the highway to escape the traffic jam.
According to observations, although the construction unit has assigned people to direct traffic, due to the large number of vehicles, people's travel through this area is still stressful.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Quang (selling water on the Thang Long Avenue frontage road) said that the barrier was erected in the past 3 days. During rush hour yesterday and today (August 20), traffic here was seriously congested.
"It takes people an additional 15 - 30 minutes to go through this intersection" - Mr. Quang said.
Ms. Le Thi Hanh said that the 9 km journey from her home in An Khanh (Hoai Duc) to Tran Duy Hung (Cau Giay) took nearly 1 hour because the barrier caused congestion on the Thang Long Avenue frontage road.
"Due to the bottleneck, cars wait in long lines, motorbikes have to weave along with cars, it is very dangerous and tiring when passing here..." - Ms. Hanh lamented.
