On September 13, Mr. Thuyet and his wife returned to their 20m2 house on Bao Linh Street (Phuc Tan Ward, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) after three days of evacuation due to rising water levels in the Red River.
Moving here to live since 2000, this is the first time the 67-year-old man has witnessed the Red River water level rise so high.
Mr. Thuyet said that from September 10, the river water began to rise rapidly. When the water overflowed the floor, he, his wife and two children quickly evacuated, leaving their belongings behind to save their lives.
"Many items such as gas stoves and electric cars have not been moved to another place yet and have been submerged in a meter of water for the past three days," said Mr. Thuyet.
Pointing to the mud-covered electric car after the historic flood, Mr. Thuyet said it was one of the most valuable assets in the family. "But as long as there are people, there will be property. I pray for favorable weather so that people can soon stabilize their lives and businesses," he added.
Since this morning, Mr. Thuyet and his wife have been washing away the mud on the walls and floors, clearing away trash, and scrubbing household items. Both he and his wife have suffered from strokes for nearly 10 years, and their health has declined, making cleaning the house difficult.
"Both children are in school so my husband and I try to clean up as much as possible," said Mr. Thuyet.
About 500m from Bao Linh street, Phuoc Long (18 years old) is also busy cleaning the house and furniture for his grandparents' family on Thanh Yen street, Phuc Tan ward. "This is the first time I have seen the water level this high" - Phuoc Long said.
Three days ago, this area was also flooded, making it very difficult for people to travel and disrupting their daily lives. The area lost power on September 10 and was only restored this morning.
Floodwaters on the Red River receded rapidly last night. Since the morning of September 13, the sky over central Hanoi has been clear. Water has completely receded in residential areas in Chuong Duong and Phuc Tan wards (Hoan Kiem District).
The streets in the neighborhoods are dry. Many families living under the Chuong Duong Bridge cleaned their houses and belongings this morning to stabilize their lives.
