Kon Tum hydropower project sluggish for 16 years without completion

Kon Tum - After 16 years since being granted an investment certificate, the Dak Mi 1A hydropower project in Dak Glei district has not yet completed construction.

On April 8, the People's Committee of Kon Tum province issued a decision to adjust the investment policy for the Dak Mi 1A hydropower project, invested by Quang Duc Kon Tum Joint Stock Company. This is the 4th time the province has adjusted the project since granting the license in 2009.

According to the new decision, the project implementation progress has been adjusted to last from 2010 to the end of 2026. It is expected to be completed and put the project with a capacity of 11MW into commercial operation by the end of December 2026.

The Provincial People's Committee requested the investor to urgently implement the project. In case there is a need for mineral exploitation within the project scope, the enterprise must report and receive approval from the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment.

Quang Duc Kon Tum Joint Stock Company is also required to coordinate with competent authorities to assess measures to minimize negative impacts on the environment and society, especially not affecting the demand for water in downstream areas.

The Provincial People's Committee emphasized that investors must focus capital sources, arrange capable and experienced personnel to ensure progress. In case the requirements are not met, the project will be considered and handled according to the law.

Notably, not only the Dak Mi 1A project, but also the Dak Mi 1 hydropower project (capacity 84MW, in Dak Choong commune, Dak Glei district, invested by Quang Duc Kon Tum Joint Stock Company) is in a state of prolonged delay.

At the end of 2024, at the Dak Mi 1 project, a serious work accident occurred, the construction scaffolding suddenly collapsed, causing dozens of tons of concrete to fall down. The accident caused 5 workers to fall into a deep water hole and were buried by rocks and soil, dying on the spot.
