On April 1, the People's Committee of Kon Tum province directed functional agencies and owners of dams and hydroelectric plants in the area to strictly implement measures to prevent drought and water shortage.
According to the Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the weather in the province is developing abnormally with severe heat, strong whirlwinds and low humidity. insignificant rainfall increases the risk of drought and water shortage.
High-risk areas include Ia H'Drai, Sa Thay, Ngoc Hoi, Dak To, Dak Ha, Kon Ray districts and Kon Tum city. Here, the highest temperature of the day ranges from 35 - 37°C, humidity from only 35 - 40%.
Kon Tum people mainly grow rubber, rice, sugarcane, crops, coffee... If the irrigation water source is exhausted, agricultural production will be seriously affected, causing great economic damage and disrupting life.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Sam, requested owners of irrigation dams and hydroelectric plants to maintain the minimum flow according to regulations to ensure the river does not dry up.
However, at the peak drought period, some hydropower investors have not yet released enough minimum water to store water for power generation.
The Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Industry and Trade to closely monitor the operation of reservoirs for hydropower projects, ensuring effective, economical and harmonious water use between energy security and water needs for production and daily life.
