Due to the high demand for pork in the last months of the year, along with the impact of the epidemic, the supply has decreased, causing the price of live pigs to increase. According to records, the price of live pigs in the Mekong Delta is currently at 61,000 - 65,000 VND/kg.
The increase in live pig prices has made Ms. Tran Kim Cuong (Long My town, Hau Giang province) excited to restore her herd to supply the upcoming Lunar New Year market.
"Compared to about 2-3 months ago, the price of live pigs has increased by 1,000-3,000 VND/kg. From now until the end of the year, traders will buy a lot of pigs, so as soon as I sell 15 pigs, I will immediately restock my herd," said Ms. Cuong.
It is known that 2 weeks ago, this farmer sold a herd of 18 pigs. After deducting the cost of feed, electricity, cleaning the barn..., Ms. Cuong made a profit of about 800,000 VND/pig, about 300,000 VND/pig higher than the previous time.
Along with taking advantage of herd restoration when demand and prices increase in the last months of the year, Mr. Nguyen Van Liem (O Mon district, Can Tho city) also carefully considers selecting breeds and cleaning barns to prevent disease.
"The weather this year is complicated, raising pigs, chickens and ducks is very difficult. When re-herding, I have to choose healthy breeds very carefully, and when importing them, I have to monitor and clean the pens regularly," said Mr. Liem.
To prevent the outbreak and spread of African swine fever in the area, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Can Tho City said that in the last months of the year, it will continue to implement a plan to inspect, check, and monitor the farming conditions and veterinary hygiene conditions of farms, livestock breeding and slaughtering facilities.
In addition, closely monitor the animal disease situation in the area to detect outbreaks early to organize and handle outbreaks quickly and promptly to avoid widespread spread...
