Tense developments in the Middle East continue to dominate the energy market. The Houthi forces in Yemen, backed by Iran, have just launched a new offensive into Saudi Arabia. The postponement of the Gulf countries' meeting with Iran also increases concerns about the spread of conflict and disruptions to oil supply.
The Houthi said they used dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles and ballistic missiles to attack King Khalid Air Force base in the city of Khamis Mushait, southwestern Saudi Arabia. The targets included fighter jet shelters, radar stations, runways and ammunition depots. The force declared this was an act of retaliation against Saudi Arabia's previous airstrikes.
Tensions increased after the Houthi expanded control in many areas of Yemen, notably Perim Island located in the middle of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a maritime route connecting to the southern gateway to the Red Sea.
Transportation through the Strait of Hormuz also decreased sharply. Preliminary ship tracking data on September 14 showed that the number of cargo ships through this strait at the weekend decreased to below 10 trips/day, compared to the average of 14 trips/day in the previous 10 days.
