World oil prices today
World oil prices continued to rise. At the end of the trading session on September 10, Brent oil closed the session up 6.42 USD, equivalent to 6.34%, to 107.63 USD/barrel; WTI oil price increased 6.43 USD, equivalent to 6.69%, to 102.48 USD/barrel.
Both oils reached their highest levels since May 19 and recorded the strongest increase in nearly two months.
World oil prices continue to rise sharply after more attacks targeting oil tankers in the Middle East, raising concerns about the risk of supply disruption.
On September 10, Houthi forces seized control of the port city of Mocha in Yemen, increasing the risk to transportation activities in the Red Sea. Meanwhile, maritime activities in the Gulf region are still limited as attacks on oil tankers have increased in recent days.
Iran said it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz on September 9, after the US attacked 5 of its oil tankers. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards warned that it would continue to increase retaliation if the US conducted more attacks.
New developments make the prospect of ending the conflict between the US and Iran less optimistic. The oil market is facing the risk of prolonged supply disruptions, instead of only being affected at a time.
According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), US crude oil inventories fell 391,000 barrels last week, to 424.1 million barrels, amid oil refining activities remaining at a high level. This decrease is significantly lower than analysts' forecast of a decrease of 1.55 million barrels.
In terms of demand, according to the monthly oil market report released on September 10, OPEC lowered its forecast for world oil demand growth in 2026 to 380,000 barrels/day. This is the fifth consecutive time the organization has lowered its forecast.
