World oil prices today
In the past week, world gasoline and oil prices simultaneously decreased sharply. At the end of the first trading session of the week, Brent oil price decreased by 2.22 USD, equivalent to 2.35%, to 90.39 USD/barrel. Meanwhile, WTI oil price decreased by 2.05 USD/barrel, equivalent to 2.35%, to 85.01 USD/barrel.
Gasoline prices turned down in the first trading session of the week, as investors sold to take profits after a recent sharp increase. Meanwhile, new US sanctions continue to increase economic pressure on Iran, amid the US-Iran conflict that has lasted for nearly 6 months.
US President Donald Trump declared an "unprecedented economic war and isolation" against Iran, and warned of economic consequences for any country or organization that supports Tehran or provides support to this country.
On the Iranian side, on August 22 (Tehran time), according to Xinhua news agency, Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei warned that any country participating in the US "economic war and isolation" campaign against Iran would be considered an enemy by Tehran.
Iran also condemned the US plan to announce new sanctions against the country, saying that these measures would put more pressure on the Iranian economy and affect Tehran's important trading partners.
While tensions continue to rise, oil transportation through the Strait of Hormuz - a route that once transported about 1/5 of global oil supplies - remains restricted.
Cargo transport data shows that less than 20 cargo ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz last weekend. Iran's and US blockades continue to restrict transportation through a shipping line that plays an important role in energy exports.
