In Hanoi, many people complained about the sudden increase in electricity bills in March. Mr. Nguyen Tien Nam (Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi City) said that because he is single, his electricity bill ranges from 300 - 400 thousand VND/month.
However, in the March invoice adjustment period, electricity bills skyrocketed sharply, reaching nearly 600 thousand VND (double the February electricity bill adjustment period).
"Not yet into the summer, but the sharp increase in electricity bills makes me very impatient. In the nearest future when Hanoi enters the hot season, I am afraid that electricity bills will skyrocket even more, especially when the electricity industry can increase electricity prices," said Mr. Nam.
Regarding this issue, Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVN Hanoi) said that since the beginning of April, the level of electricity consumption of households has been increasing rapidly.
The main reason is that the weather is starting to turn hot, the temperature is higher, making people tend to use air conditioners and cooling equipment with more frequency, and for longer periods of the day.
Along with that, during peak hours, many families use many large-capacity equipment such as magnetic stoves, washing machines, and hot water machines at the same time, causing great pressure on the power system and causing the bill to increase dramatically.
"Every summer, the number of questions and complaints from customers related to electricity bills increases. However, after being inspected, it was shown that the increase was entirely due to the actual increase in household electricity consumption, not due to errors in recording metric index or calculating invoices," said a representative of EVN Hanoi.

According to this unit, the air conditioner is the most power consumption device in the summer. According to research, electricity consumption of the temperature air conditioner accounts for 28 - 64%, sometimes up to 80% of the total family consumption. The outdoor temperature increased to 1 degrees Celsius, the electricity consumption of the air conditioner increased from 2-3% depending on the type. If the temperature increases to 5 degrees Celsius, the power consumption increases by 10%.
Because the principle of operating the air conditioner is that the hotter the air conditioner, the more electricity it consumes, so it can be used at the same level of 8 - 10 hours/day, but air conditioning in 35 - 40 degrees Celsius weather will consume much more electricity in early summer, when the temperature is about 30 - 35 degrees Celsius.
Understanding this, electricity users will find a solution to the question: why did the air conditioning time increase like last month?
Not to mention, the amount of electricity consumed is " tac gia" due to usage habits. Every 1 degree Celsius drop in the air conditioning room costs an additional 1.5 - 2% of electricity consumption. When using many air conditioners at the same time or combining them with other equipment such as refrigerators, washing machines, water pumps, air purifiers, etc., the electricity consumption can double or triple compared to winter.
To help people be more proactive in controlling electricity consumption, limiting the "escalating" electricity bill, EVN Hanoi recommends that customers, agencies and production places join hands to use electricity economically and efficiently, turn off unnecessary electrical equipment and limit the use of high-powered equipment during peak hours of electricity consumption from 10:00 - 14:00 and from 19:00 - 23:00 every day;
Do not use many electrical appliances at the same time to avoid overloading the power grid and at the same time guard against the risks of fire and explosion of the power grid, power stations and residential areas. Along with the use of energy-saving devices: Prioritize products with high-performance energy labels (energy flashes), switch to using LED bulbs, Inverter air conditioners...
According to statistics from EVN Hanoi, in the first 3 months of 2025, the electricity savings of customers at EVN Hanoi reached 56,588,966 kWh, down 10,164,492 kWh compared to the same period in 2024 (66,753,458 kWh), a decrease of about 15.2%.
This is an encouraging result from programs to encourage efficient use of electricity and demonstrates the people's participation in adjusting their reasonable electricity consumption habits.
With the weather forecast to continue to be hot and hot in the coming months, EVN Hanoi recommends that each household uses electricity economically and efficiently, turning awareness into action to save electricity into a habit of each citizen. Using electricity at a cost is an extremely necessary task for each person, each home and the whole community.
