On June 12, Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee informed that the locality has just issued a Plan to implement the Strategy for Steel Industry Development to 2030, with a vision to 2050, with the orientation of making the steel industry one of the important sectors in the local industrial structure.
According to the plan, Lao Cai will develop the steel industry in the direction of deep processing, improving product value, applying modern technology, saving energy, reducing emissions, associated with mining, processing, manufacturing, logistics and border gate economy.

By 2030, the province will maintain and improve the efficiency of existing iron and steel production facilities; encourage the development of products such as construction steel, shaped steel, steel structures, steel for industry and mechanical engineering.
Lao Cai is also oriented to research and attract a steel complex project with a scale of about 3 million tons/year in Vo Lao Industrial Park or other suitable locations, creating motivation to promote the development of the metallurgical industry.
In the period up to 2050, the province aims to gradually become a material center for metallurgy, deep steel processing and manufacturing, and important supporting industries of the Northern Midlands and Mountains region; developing the steel industry in a green, modern, resource-saving and environmentally friendly direction.
In which, priority sectors include deep ore mining and processing; metallurgy; high-quality steel production; shaped steel; steel for mechanical manufacturing; steel structures and post-steel processing products.
According to the development space orientation, the area with iron ore resources will focus on mining, selecting and processing raw materials according to the plan.
Tang Loong Industrial Park prioritizes steel rolling projects, deep processing, and supporting industries; while Vo Lao Industrial Park is oriented to attract steel smelting, mechanical engineering, steel structure and supporting industries projects.
Notably, Lao Cai currently has about 62 planned iron mines with a total reserve of about 194 million tons.
In which, the Quy Xa iron mine project has a planned reserve of about 94 million tons, with an expected capacity of about 5 million tons/year.
The province also determines that the development of the steel industry must be associated with advantages in energy sources, especially hydropower systems, electricity transmission infrastructure and the potential for developing renewable energy sources.

Steel industry projects are oriented to apply advanced technology, automation, digitization, energy-saving use, water circulation, reuse of waste and by-products in the production process to reduce environmental impact.
To realize the goal, Lao Cai will focus on removing difficulties for existing projects, attracting dynamic projects, developing technical infrastructure, logistics, improving resource management efficiency, innovating technology and training human resources to serve the metallurgical industry.
The Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Industry and Trade to be the focal point for advising, monitoring, inspecting and summarizing the plan implementation situation; departments, branches, and localities coordinate to implement and promptly propose solutions to remove difficulties and promote the development of the steel industry in the area.
