Traders reduce deposits
At this time, in the fields of the provinces and cities in the West, gardeners are busy preparing ornamental flowers for the upcoming Lunar New Year.
According to many gardeners, the price of ornamental flowers has increased, the market has improved compared to last year. However, although traders placed deposits early, the deposit amount is less than previous years, only about 1/4 of the amount of money spent on flowers.
The chrysanthemum garden of gardener Le Van Thanh (Vi Thanh city, Hau Giang province) received a deposit of tens of millions of dong from traders, this number is much lower than last year.
Mr. Thanh said: "Traders buy raspberry chrysanthemums at 180,000 VND/pair, 10,000 VND higher than last year. Even though they paid the deposit early, they reduced the deposit because of difficulties and concerns about the quality of the flowers. Last year they deposited half of the amount of flowers, but this year they deposited 10 million VND."
Also hesitating about receiving the deposit early or late, but because of financial difficulties to take care of the Tet flower garden, Mr. Pham Van Ut (Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) also agreed to receive the deposit early.
It is known that traders have deposited 15 million VND for more than 3,000 pots of ornamental flowers of this garden, a deposit 5 - 6 million VND lower than previous years.
Fear of losing deposit, gardeners invest double the cost
Although the Tet flower market has improved somewhat, the impact of bad weather has made cultivation difficult for gardeners. Many gardeners have invested double the deposit to build greenhouses, screen houses, and fertilizers to care for and protect ornamental plants.
"The weather changes so it's hot, cold, and then rains out of season, so ornamental plants are susceptible to pests and diseases. Plants don't flower on schedule. The most feared thing is that the plants wilt and die, which is a big hassle. I've already received a deposit from traders and have to guarantee their orders. I have to pay an additional ten million to buy fertilizer and medicine, repair flower shelves to make them airy, and prevent pests and diseases," said Mr. Ut.
Local agricultural sectors recommend that due to the impact of storms, rain, and erratic heat, ornamental flower growers need to regularly monitor and promptly respond to adverse weather developments.
Accordingly, gardeners need to equip temporary rain and sun protection systems to limit the impact of weather on plant growth; increase organic fertilizer application to help plants have good resistance, limit pests and diseases; improve irrigation ditch systems, clear water flows to limit damage caused by flooding...
