Stock market has the strongest gaining session since the beginning of August

Overwhelming and spreading buying power helped the stock market have a booming trading session.

Opening the trading session on August 21, the market still fell into a gloomy state, stock groups had almost no movement in the morning session even though this was a day with notable events in the market when according to FTSE Russell's schedule, the September 2026 FTSE GEIS semi-annual review is expected to be announced.

Unexpected developments then took place in the afternoon session when the market received very strong support from the securities company stock group when they simultaneously increased sharply and many have increased to the ceiling. Cash flow accordingly spread, helping the green color expand on the electronic board, many bluechips and large stocks also eased their upward momentum.

Closing the session on August 21, VN-Index increased by 34 points to the threshold of 1,768 points. Liquidity was also improved in the stock market session. Total trading value on HOSE reached nearly 18,400 billion VND, an increase of more than 36% compared to the session on August 20. This is the trading session with the highest liquidity this week and also the strongest increase of the index since the beginning of August.

The nearly 2% increase put Vietnamese stocks in the group of markets with the most positive developments in the region during the day. The strong increase in the last session of the week helped the capitalization on HOSE increase by more than 163,000 billion VND to about 8.53 million billion VND.

Market sentiment also improved when foreign investors ended the selling streak to return to net buying of about 39 billion VND. SHB, SSI or MSN codes attracted the most foreign investors.

Overall for the week, VN-Index increased by 39 points. This week, the market still had adjustment sessions but the level was not too deep, while today was recorded as the strongest trading session in nearly a month. However, liquidity has not yet reached an abundant level, showing that large cash flow is still quite cautious.

The best performance in this session belonged to the securities, technology, banking, real estate groups... By stock, VIC continued to contribute the most to the market with more than 5 points. Followed by the main codes belonging to the real estate and banking groups.

The market is more vibrant right before an important event. According to the schedule, FTSE Russell announced the official stock portfolio for the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS), expected in the early morning of August 22, 8 am Vietnam time. This is considered an important preparation step for the process of Vietnam being transformed from a frontier market to a second-tier emerging market, with the effective date starting from September 21, 2026.

Yuanta Securities Company (SEC) believes that this event will expand access to Vietnamese stocks for international passive investment funds using the FTSE index as a basis for capital allocation.

According to Yuanta Securities Company, 27 Vietnamese stocks are likely to be added to the FTSE GEIS index sets, with a total estimated purchase value of about 1.5 billion USD when the entire roadmap is completed. The roadmap to increase the proportion is expected to be implemented in 4 phases within a year. In addition, there are ETF funds and related index funds managing total assets of about 1,397 billion USD, of which the estimated capital allocated to Vietnam is about 1.54 billion USD.

However, Yuanta Securities Company noted that the impact of upgraded cash flow needs to be viewed in a medium and long-term direction. In the short term, the 150 million USD of the first phase is not large enough to create a uniform impact on the entire market, but the impact may be more obvious in stocks with high proportion or low liquidity.

According to Yuanta Securities Company's assessment, this is the capital that has the potential to create a more noteworthy driving force for liquidity and foreign demand. Investors should monitor stocks that have both a large expected buying value and a significant cash flow absorption level compared to the average trading value, instead of just looking at the total amount of money bought in the entire period to increase the proportion.
