Sharp decrease in supply
According to Lao Dong on March 13, pork prices in Ho Chi Minh City fluctuate between 160,000-190,000 VND/kg for retail pork. Selling prices have increased sharply compared to last month due to a shortage of supply.
Ms. Thanh Trinh - a pork trader near Thanh Da market (Binh Thanh district) said that the purchasing power is low, the price of meat import is high, so she only imports about 20kg per day but still sells it for many days. "Pork prices are increasing every day, so when selling, we have to increase them too, customers who buy a lot can reduce them by a few thousand dong, they cannot reduce them more because they will lose money" - Ms. Trinh shared.
At Hoc Mon unit market (Hoc Mon district), which supplies about 50% of fresh pork to Ho Chi Minh City, in March 2025 alone, the price of this item has fluctuated continuously. Of which, many times the price of grade 1 wholegrain pork is up to 105,000 VND/kg.
Some businesses said that they are facing many challenges as the recent African swine fever epidemic has been complicated and re-ikerced, the price of animal feed is still high... Some units have limited sales to the market, making it impossible for businesses to buy pigs.

Closely monitor pork prices
Recently, Vissan Company has sent a document to the Department of Finance and the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City proposing to increase the selling price of pork products participating in the market stabilization program. According to Mr. Phan Van Dung - Deputy General Director of Vissan Company, on March 3, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Finance issued a decision allowing the price of pork based on the price of imported live pork materials at VND 74,000/kg.
However, since the beginning of March, the price of live pigs in the market has increased continuously. As of March 10, this enterprise had to buy live pigs at 79,000 VND/kg, an increase of nearly 7% compared to the base price on March 3. According to the regulations of the market stabilization program, businesses can propose to increase prices when raw material prices and input costs increase by more than 3% compared to the previous announcement.
Faced with input cost pressure, businesses proposed to adjust pork prices to be stable, increasing by 6-7% and applying from March 17 if approved by the Department of Finance.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also issued a document requesting the Department of Industry and Trade to preside over and coordinate with provinces and cities to provide a source of live pigs for Ho Chi Minh City to grasp the situation, thereby having a plan and supply of live pigs for the city. At the same time, do not let shortages or disruptions in goods sources cause unreasonable price increases. Units strengthen inspection and strictly handle cases of speculation in hoarding goods and receiving goods of unknown origin, especially live pigs.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment reviews and reports on the total number of pigs in Ho Chi Minh City, the number of pork from other provinces and cities consumed in the city. The Department of Finance coordinates with the Department of Industry and Trade to advise on measures to manage and operate pork prices in the area. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety closely monitors, ensures good food safety and environmental sanitation, and strictly and promptly handles violations.
Enterprises participating in the market stabilization program (pork products) also develop a plan to reserve goods at reasonable and stable prices, ensuring adequate supply of registered products to participate in the program. In addition, it is necessary to flexibly implement promotional programs to stimulate people's consumption.
