Mekong Delta - As demand increases in the last months of the year, traders are willing to offer high prices to buy rice, but there is still not enough supply.

Farmers in western provinces are harvesting autumn and winter rice crops in 2024. High rice prices, plus the time in the last months of the year, traders actively seek to buy rice reserves for the upcoming Tet holiday.

Down the boat to buy rice from Vinh Long to Hau Giang during the past month, Mr. Nguyen Van Mau (trader buying rice, Can Tho City) has a little regret when he only bought 8 tons, instead of 15 tons than expected.

Speaking about the reason for the decrease in purchasing output, Mr. Mau said: "Right after the thunderstorm, the weather was bad, so the output of farmers sold to us little. Many of them joined the cooperative, sold to the company, so they could not sell to us."

The decrease in output compared to the plan also affects Mau's Tet market supply reserves. "I buy rice and grind it, reserve it for resale to wholesale markets and retailers. The price of rice is high, so I want to buy more rice to earn profits for Tet, but compared to every year, this crop I buy the lowest number," said Mau.

At the end of the year, purchasing power gradually increased, although traders offered prices higher than the general level of 100 VND / kg, Mr. Tran Van To (Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang Province) still decided not to sell.

"At the time of harvesting, 2 - 3 traders came to me for higher prices than the market, but I refused because I had a contract to sell to the company before," saido.

It is known that due to the impact of thunderstorms, full tide in September, the area of fallen rice, epidemics, Mr. To's post-harvest productivity is only 650 kg / kg. With a selling price of 7,700 VND / kg, after subtracting production costs, Mr. To earned a profit of 1.8 million VND / kg.

According to the review of Hau Giang province's agriculture sector, in the province, there are 20 enterprises, 45 cooperatives associated with rice production and packaging with more than 20,600 turns of households participating, covering an area of more than 22,130 hectares, with an output of 155,054 tons.

The province's agriculture sector is stepping up the expansion of models of linkage with producers and factories; intensifying production transformation in order to create new breakthroughs, contributing to raising incomes for farmers, especially in communes to build a new countryside.

As of October 21, Hau Giang province recorded 74.2 hectares of autumn - winter rice were inundated in Phung Hiep district and Long My town, of which 3.2 hectares suffered from productivity damage at the rate of 15 - 20% on the same area.

In Vinh Long province, according to the provincial agriculture sector, farmers have harvested over 13,000 hectares of rice, reaching nearly 40% of the cultivated area of the autumn-winter crop, the average yield is estimated to reach 5.7 tons / ha. The impact of thunderstorms reduced profits by 20-30%.
