Speaking at the workshop, Permanent Vice Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee Truong Canh Tuyen said that Hau Giang is honored to be the first province chosen by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to organize the launching ceremony of the Project "Sustainable development of one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission specialized rice, associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region by 2030."
The Standing Vice Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee said that the Project not only brings direct benefits to rice farmers but also contributes to the goal of minimizing the negative impacts of climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the value of the rice supply chain in a sustainable manner.
The Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also said that Hau Giang has set a target of implementing the Project on an area of 28,000 hectares by 2025, focusing on consolidating the existing areas of the Sustainable Agriculture Transformation Project (VnSAT); by 2030, the area will increase to 46,000 hectares, implemented in 6/8 district-level units.
Up to now, Hau Giang province has completed the selection and identification of areas participating in the Project, reviewed to meet the criteria and ensure compliance with the province's planning.
In 2024, the province has also been implementing provincial and district-level pilot models with a total area of 180 hectares, applying advanced technical measures such as: alternating wet and dry irrigation, 1 must 5 reductions, sustainable rice production according to SRP standards...
Mr. Le Thanh Tung - Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) - said that linking the high-quality, low-emission rice industry chain aims to increase farmers' income by increasing production values. In addition, it contributes to the application of techniques and technologies to increase fertilizer efficiency, including row or cluster sowing combined with burying fertilizer.
According to the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the Mekong Delta currently has about 180 enterprises qualified to do rice export business and participating in rice purchasing. Of these, about 50 enterprises are associated with rice purchasing. The associated enterprises purchase about 26% of the total rice growing area in the region.
Currently, the rice cultivation area of the entire Mekong Delta is 3.89 ha/year, about 1.7 million ha of rice cultivation land, accounting for 53.7% of the country's rice cultivation area; rice production in the region in recent years has been stable from 24 million tons/year to 25 million tons/year.
