Counterfeit goods crimes in Gia Lai are increasingly sophisticated

THANH TUẤN |

Gia Lai - Forgery traders use sophisticated tricks, mainly transacting via social networks.

On June 17, Mr. Pham Van Binh - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Gia Lai province - said: Conducting a peak period of the fight against smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, and intellectual property infringement, the interdisciplinary force has discovered, handled, and investigated many serious cases.

According to Mr. Binh, the business situation of counterfeit, poor quality, and unknown origin goods is increasingly sophisticated and complicated. The subjects took advantage of modern technology to buy and sell goods through social networks, causing difficulties for the authorities.

In addition, a part of the people have a preferential mentality, prioritizing buying cheap goods, goods of unknown origin, floating... indirectly creating conditions for violating business entities to exist and be difficult to control thoroughly.

Since the beginning of the year, the Market Management force, Economic Police, Provincial Border Guards, Customs, Department of Health Inspectorate... have coordinated to detect, arrest, and destroy many counterfeit, poor quality goods. If left on the market, it will seriously affect people's health.

Notably, the cases of provincial police agencies destroying fake coffee powder and spring roll production and trading locations have caused a stir in public opinion.

In April 2025, the police discovered Ho Ngoc Hai (born in 1969, residing in Hoi Phu ward, Pleiku city) producing and trading about 107kg of Hong Hai branded coffee.

These coffees have a caffeine content of 0.34% to 0.68%, 70% lower than the minimum according to TCVN 5251:2015. The Investigation Police Agency has initiated a case for the crime of producing and trading counterfeit food under Article 193 of the Penal Code.

On June 1, the police coordinated to inspect food safety at the Nem cha Dung business household (address: Group 6, Hoi Thuong Ward, Pleiku City) owned by Nguyen Dang Khoa (born in 1980).

The authorities seized 157.5 kg of nem, spring rolls of all kinds and additives, sent samples for testing and all were not of good quality and did not ensure food hygiene and safety.

The investigation agency has prosecuted the accused Nguyen Dang Khoa for violating food safety regulations under Article 317 of the Penal Code.

Then, on June 10, 2025, the police discovered that business household Duong Thi Hang (address: Group 3, Hoi Phu Ward, Pleiku City) was producing and trading counterfeit goods, which were coffee powder under the THINH COFFEE brand.

Through the results of the appraisal request, the police prosecuted the defendants Nguyen Van Vong and Phan Duy Trung for the crime of producing and trading counterfeit food under Article 193 of the Penal Code.
