At the meeting, the two sides signed a strategic cooperation agreement, aiming to turn Vietnam into a world center for research and development of major technologies.
Starting cooperation since 2009, after 16 years of cooperation and development, Viettel and Qualcomm have successfully deployed many products of the 3G, 4G, and 5G technology generations. In particular, in 2022, the two groups will start researching and producing 5G Open RAN broadcasting stations.
After only 2 years, Viettel became the first partner in the world to put the 5G Open RAN broadcasting station using Qualcomm chipsets into trial implementation.

It is expected that in 2025, there will be more than 2,000 5G Open RAN stations deployed widely by Viettel, affirming Viettel's ability to master 5G technology. The product has been exported by Viettel to the Middle East market.
This is a step forward to make Vietnam one of 6 countries in the world with the capacity to produce 5G network equipment. This project has just been nominated for the Open RAN Excellence category at the Network X Awards 2025 taking place in Paris - France this coming October.
In addition, Viettel and Qualcomm successfully developed the world's first 5G AI Camera for smart transportation, which has been widely deployed in the field of smart transportation in Vietnam and is being exported to a number of international markets.
Following the above successes, Viettel and Qualcomm will continue to launch research and development projects with the goal of Viettel mastering strategic technologies, including: 5G/6G infrastructure, smart network management system based on AI, AI processing infrastructure, data center infrastructure, AI solutions for government and businesses, 5G/6G smart terminal devices such as AI cameras, phones, tablets, computers, AIoT...
These are all technologies and products in the group of 11 strategic technologies announced by the Government, contributing to the realization of the goal of making the digital economy contribute 30% of Vietnam's GDP by 2030.
The meeting between the two top leaders of Qualcomm and Viettel took place in the context of Vietnam's drastic implementation of national strategies on science and technology development, innovation and digital transformation, in which technology corporations such as Viettel play a pioneering and leading role.
Chairman and General Director of Qualcomm, Mr. Cristiano Amon affirmed: What makes the relationship between Viettel and Qualcomm special is that the two groups have a long history of cooperation, both with the desire to develop breakthrough solutions that bring value to customers.
Viettel is different from many other enterprises in having a strong R&D team, especially a spirit of dedication, ready to solve difficult problems for Qualcomm. That spirit is the reason why we want to accompany Viettel.

Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang - Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group - emphasized: "The CEO of Qualcomm coming to Vietnam and Viettel this time is the right time, when the Vietnamese technology business community is being given a great mission by the State in researching and applying technology to develop the country.
The deeper cooperation between the two groups in the next phase will certainly open up historic opportunities, making Vietnam a leading technology center in the region.
Results of cooperation between Viettel and Qualcomm
In 2009, Qualcomm granted Viettel a license to use chipsets to successfully develop and produce USB 3G made in Vietnam - a device connecting broadband Internet via Viettel's 3G mobile network, reaching a maximum speed of 7.2 Mbps download and 5.76 Mbps upload.
In 2017, Viettel and Qualcomm successfully developed the first WiFi AP made in Vietnam product. WiFi products produced by Viettel have an access speed 3 times higher but the price is only about 70% compared to similar products on the market.
In 2018, Viettel was granted the right to use Qualcomm's patents to develop, manufacture and distribute 3G & 4G devices.
At the same time, both sides will produce VIPPHONE security phones - a phone line capable of encrypting calls, messages and preventing signals.
This product owns a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 specialized security chip and the world's safest algorithm, even supercomputers cannot decrypt it.
