Melasma or hyperpigmentation is a common skin problem, often caused by acne, sunlight or hormonal changes, according to Onlymyhealth.
Although many people try to treat it with enough products, some mistaken skin care habits have unintentionally made this condition worse. Dr. Soma Sarkar, a dermatologist in Mumbai, pointed out 7 common mistakes to avoid.
Skipping sunscreen
Not using sunscreen causes the skin to be directly exposed to UV rays, causing melanin production, making dark melasma dark and difficult to fade. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply it after 3-4 hours of going out.
Exfoliating too much
Overuse exfoliants or acids such as glycolics and salicylics can cause irritation, inflammation and hyperpigmentation. Exfoliate gently, regularly and always hydrate properly.
Use natural remedies to damage the skin
rub your skin with chickpea flour, lime or homemade mixes that can damage the skin's barrier, cause burns and worsen melasma. Instead, prioritize the use of safe, tested ingredients such as vitamin C or azelaic acid.
Scratching your skin too hard
Strong friction damages the skin, causing inflammation and worsening melasma. Instead of rubbing, you should use gentle chemical exfoliants and moisturize them thoroughly.
ignoring the effects of hair dye
Hair dye can irritate the skin around the forehead and hair roots, leading to irregular hyperpigmentation. It is necessary to protect the skin carefully and wash the dye immediately after use.
Expecting quick results and using too many strong products at the same time
Taking in many strong active ingredients at the same time can easily cause irritation and increase pigmentation. You should use products containing vitamin C, glycolic acid, mandelic acid or azelaic acid according to the doctor's instructions and persist for many weeks.
Lack of patience and improper care
Melasma cannot disappear overnight. There needs to be a scientific, persistent care process, avoiding harmful habits and always protecting the skin from the sun.
Note
Proper skin care with gentle ingredients, regular use of sunscreen and avoiding the above mistakes will help control and improve dark spots more effectively over time.
