The tournament takes place from May 19 to 24, gathering nearly 370 athletes and coaches from 7 countries in the region including Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Laos.
This year's competition contents include performance rights (kata) and sparring for both the recruitment system and the youth system.
In the national team system, Vietnamese judo won up to 14 gold medals in many male and female weight classes. Faces who brought high achievements can be mentioned such as To Thi Trang, Nguyen Thi Huong, Le Huynh Tuong Vi, Chu Duc Dat or Le Hai Ba.
Meanwhile, the young force continued to show significant depth when contributing 12 more championships. Many young athletes such as Nguyen Thi Tu Trinh, Ta Yen Nhu, Tran Pham Thanh Phat or Nguyen Ngoc Phi Long all competed effectively, helping the home team maintain their advantage in many weight classes.
At the end of the tournament, Vietnamese judo won a total of 33 gold medals, 35 silver medals and 51 bronze medals to lead the overall standings. Meanwhile, Indonesia ranked second and Thailand ranked third overall.
In addition to its professional significance, the tournament is also an opportunity for teams in the region to strengthen exchanges and rub shoulders. This is also considered an important preparation step for many countries to aim for major continental playgrounds in the coming time.
