In recent days, on many streets of Ho Chi Minh City, a series of large electricity consumption billboards have been turned off after 10 pm, or even earlier, to save electricity.
On the evening of April 23, on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City such as Le Loi, Nguyen Hue, Le Thanh Ton, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Hoang Van Thu, Truong Son... many signs and large advertising screens simultaneously cut off power after 10 pm.
Mr. Vu Quang Dao - Director of Hoa Sen Advertising Joint Stock Company - said that the enterprise is exploiting 6 large billboards that both advertise for businesses and encourage political tasks.
Implementing Directive No. 10/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister "On strengthening the implementation of electricity saving and developing rooftop solar power" and Official Dispatch No. 2427/UBND-KT of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee "On strengthening the implementation of electricity saving solutions and ensuring safe and stable power supply in Ho Chi Minh City in the dry season of 2026 and the 2027–2030 period", the company has cut lighting for about 8 hours per day (from 10 pm the previous day to 6 am the next morning) helping to save about 21,600 kWh per month.
Previously, each billboard consumed about 32-34 million VND in electricity bills per month, now the cost has decreased significantly, some billboards have decreased by nearly half," Mr. Dao said.
Mr. Le Van Hoanh - Deputy Head of Business Department of Saigon Power Company - said that the company has sent many documents to the People's Committees of 19 wards and businesses in the managed area to propagate about electricity saving.
Mr. Hoanh added that the company also works directly with advertising businesses to implement electricity saving by turning off electricity or reducing the light of large capacity billboards after 10 pm. Some advertising screens are still bright after 10 pm because they use small LED lights, and the electricity consumption is negligible.
Advertising companies have cooperated very actively, helping to reduce the lighting capacity of large billboards by over 30%," said Mr. Le Van Hoanh.
According to Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation, in the first quarter of 2026, the total electricity saved in the city was 327.4 million kW, equivalent to 2.45% of commercial electricity.
