Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received patient N.M.T (65 years old, Hanoi) in a state of serious jaw injury after a rare work accident: Stepping into a cargo elevator pit, hitting the facial wall with a metal wall while the elevator was still moving.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with a complex wound running from the lips to the left Korea, with a broken lower jaw, upper jaw and left cheekbone, causing the left face to "pair". Along with that is severed nerve No. VII, the ear saliva tract and the nasal passages - extremely small structures but play an important role in movement, emotions and daily activities.
Faced with the critical condition, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha - Head of the Department of Facial Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery directed an urgent consultation with the participation of specialists: Anesthesia and resuscitation, thoracic cardiovascular disease, and maxillofacial surgery. The professional council agreed to perform emergency surgery that night to control bleeding, preserve function and prevent long-term complications.
MSc. Dr. To Tuan Linh, a member of the surgical team, said: During the surgery that lasted for many hours, the doctors combined the upper jaw and lower jaw with a specialized visceral brace system, restored the facial pathology, and especially performed 3 sophisticated minor surgeries: Stitching nerve No. VII at the base near the amniotic bone; Reconnecting the saliva Tube of the ear; Re-strengthening the left namical cavity. Thanks to that, the patient's facial muscles are preserved, limiting the risk of facial paralysis, and preventing complications of leakage, culverts of the saliva gland or laryngas.
After surgery, the patient was alert, huyet flow was stable, and there were no complications during the surgery. The neurological - linear structures are fully preserved, opening up opportunities for comprehensive recovery in both aesthetics and function.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha added that if not treated promptly, the patient may suffer from severe sequelae for life such as permanent facial paralysis, watery tears, foot-and-mouth disease, or saliva leakage inflammation that causes facial deformities.
