Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital has just successfully performed laparoscopic uterine fibroid removal surgery for a 31-year-old female patient in Ninh Binh in a state of severe anemia due to prolonged menstruation.
The patient has a history of one cesarean section, uterine fibroids were detected before but had not been treated. Recently, prolonged menstruation has caused the body to become exhausted, often tired, and painful in the lower abdomen.
Upon admission, the patient was in a state of pale skin and mucous membranes. Examination results showed that the uterus was large, equivalent to an 8-week pregnant woman. Ultrasound recorded a tumor with a size of 102x80mm. Blood tests showed that the hemoglobin (Hb) index only reached 61g/l, a sharp decrease compared to the normal level of over 120g/l.
Doctors diagnosed the patient with a large uterine fibroid, accompanied by amenorrhea and severe anemia. The patient was prescribed 3 units of intravenous red blood cells to improve her physical condition before surgery.
According to initial assessments at many medical facilities, with large tumors, complex locations, accompanied by a history of cesarean section and severe anemia, the possibility of endoscopic dissection is very difficult. The main treatment given is open surgery, even possible hysterectomy - which means losing the opportunity to have children in the future.
Before the patient's desire to continue having children, after professional consultation, Dr. BSCKII Mai Trong Hung, Director of Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, decided to choose laparoscopic surgery to remove fibroids, in order to maximally preserve the uterus.
During the surgery, the team faced many challenges when the tumor was large, located in the posterior wall of the uterus - a difficult-to-reach location, with a high risk of bleeding, especially on the background of severe anemia and old surgical scars.
However, with in-depth experience and techniques, doctors successfully removed the tumor through endoscopy, controlled good blood loss and preserved the uterus intact.
The surgery took place safely and effectively with minimally invasive methods. Thanks to the small incision, the patient recovered quickly, reduced postoperative pain and soon stabilized health.
The success of the case not only helped the patient end prolonged menstruation and anemia but also kept the opportunity to become a mother - something that was once at risk of not being possible.
