Strong transformation for sustainable development of Vietnam's livestock industry

Faced with increasing pressure from climate change and many other challenges, Vietnam's livestock industry is facing strong transformation requirements.

Entering the era of national development, Vietnam's livestock industry is facing a strong need for transformation. After nearly two decades of growth and deep integration, livestock has become an important pillar of agriculture with outstanding achievements such as: pig herd size currently ranked 6th in the world, waterfowl herd ranked 2nd globally, along with a feed production system, veterinary medicine and milk processing belonging to the leading group in the ASEAN region. However, entering a new stage of development, simple scale expansion is no longer the only measure of breakthrough.

Current reality shows that the livestock industry is suffering from double impacts from climate change and market pressure. Prolonged heat waves, extreme weather fluctuations and the risk of emerging epidemics not only reduce productivity and increase risks for livestock but also push operating costs up. At the same time, livestock is both an industry heavily affected by natural disasters and one of the significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, requiring strict solutions to control and reduce emissions.

In that context, "green livestock" is no longer an incentive choice but has become an inevitable direction for survival and development of the entire industry.

Sustainable transformation does not stop at applying individual technical solutions, but is a change in thinking throughout the value chain. Developing modern livestock requires a balance between economic efficiency, scientific and technological progress, animal health, environmental protection and social responsibility.

To make this model effective in practice, building close links between scientists, managers, businesses and farmers plays a key role, helping to quickly bring technical advances from laboratories to apply at each farm and production household.

To find breakthrough solutions and access to advanced technology knowledge in the world, promoting international cooperation is the top priority. After 18 years since first hosting in 2008, Vietnam has continued to be selected as the host country of the 21st Asia-Australia Agricultural Science Conference (AAAP 2026). This is an important milestone, affirming Vietnam's increasingly proactive role in the scientific community and global livestock development.

Taking place from October 28-31, 2026, at the National Convention Center (Hanoi), the conference has a xuyên suốt theme "Sustainable Animal Production".

The scientific program of the conference is built in an interdisciplinary direction with 14 comprehensive thematic groups, focusing on solving core problems such as digital transformation, smart livestock, environmental management, biosafety and animal welfare.

Through this forum, the Organizing Committee hopes to present the "Hanoi Message" on sustainable livestock - a place where people, environment and livestock develop harmoniously, creating a launching pad to bring Vietnam's livestock industry to reach new heights in the new era.
