At the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Electricity Management and Distribution, the predecessor of EVNHCMC (August 7, 1976 - August 7, 2026) held on August 7, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - General Director of EVNHCMC - said that after the country's reunification, Ho Chi Minh City's electricity system was only able to distribute at 200 MW, with electricity losses up to over 20%, the city's electricity sector has overcome obstacles to restore power grid capacity to bring electricity for production and to suburban areas.
Currently, EVNHCMC has completed the commissioning of 100% of 110 kV unmanned substations, 100% of 22 kV public power grids and remotely monitored and controlled switching equipment, 100% of customers are installed with remote meters. EVNHCMC's smart grid index ranks 41/92 power companies with smart grids in the world, only behind Singapore in the ASEAN bloc.
From after July 2025, power supply for a 14 million-population megacity poses completely new requirements, which are uninterrupted, risk-free, with large reserves and rapid recovery capability, meeting the highest standards, serving financial centers, technology, healthcare, smart transportation, the core components of a modern city.
EVNHCMC determines that it is necessary to build a smart power grid, not only stopping at automation but also integrating digital databases, connecting with the smart urban ecosystem, becoming a part of Ho Chi Minh City's digital infrastructure.
EVNHCMC will ensure urban energy security with high reliability, without interruption in any situation; promote the development of renewable energy, energy transition, energy saving and efficiency. At the same time, build a high-quality human resource team with digital thinking, modern management capacity and technology mastery.
EVNHCMC's goal by 2030 is to build an electricity system on par with advanced cities in the Asia-Pacific region with leading group reliability, high digitalization, and international standard service quality.
On this occasion, EVNHCMC was honored to receive the Third-class Labor Medal for outstanding achievements in applying smart grid development technology to ensure power supply for Ho Chi Minh City.
