Phu Quoc changes environmental protection awareness from the grassroots

Kien Giang - Small actions from the grassroots have gradually raised people's awareness, joining hands with Phu Quoc City authorities to solve the waste problem.

The leaders of Suoi Da Hamlet, Duong To Commune (Phu Quoc City) have just conducted a survey of the alleys of residential areas in the area and found that there is almost no littering. The alleys have trash bins, are neat and clean, and contribute to gradually reducing the amount of household waste discharged into the environment, preserving the landscape and a clean, green environment. This is the result of the mobilization of people to contribute funds to buy trash bins implemented by the People's Committee of Suoi Da Hamlet.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Han - Party cell secretary, head of the People's Committee of Suoi Da hamlet - said: Previously, garbage collection on inter-hamlet roads encountered many difficulties. Because there were no garbage bins, people littered, polluting the surrounding living environment. Most of the garbage was plastic, difficult to decompose, remaining in the environment for a long time, creating favorable conditions for mosquitoes and pathogens to develop, affecting people's health.

In 2020, the People's Committee of Suoi Da Hamlet surveyed inter-group and inter-hamlet routes, hotspots of waste, complex environmental sanitation or routes where vehicles could not access to collect garbage. Then the Organizing Committee held a meeting of the People's Self-Management Group, mobilizing people to contribute money to buy trash bins, arranged in alleys of residential areas. This seemingly small and simple work has brought unexpected practical results because it not only significantly improved the living environment but also greatly raised people's awareness.

Ms. Ho My Huong, a resident of Suoi Da hamlet, shared: “Before, there were no trash cans, so I had to drive my car to the main road to find a place to throw trash. Now, with a row of trash cans in the area, people no longer throw trash around, creating a bad smell or causing flies.”

Mr. Phu Don Tung, a resident of Suoi Da hamlet, also informed: "Since the hamlet mobilized people, they have been conscious of putting trash in the bins and then pooling money to buy trash bins. The roads in the hamlet are also more beautiful and cleaner, and the garbage collectors have an easier time cleaning up."

Suoi Da Hamlet has 589 households with more than 2,000 people. Since 2020, the hamlet has mobilized people to contribute to buying more than 100 trash cans to be placed in alleys of residential areas. During the process of using the trash cans that were damaged, the Hamlet People's Committee continued to mobilize people to buy new trash cans, ensuring the garbage collection of the City Urban Works Management Board.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Han added: “Phu Quoc is a tourist city, so every citizen must be aware of ensuring environmental hygiene. We think that besides big programs, small actions at the grassroots level, from mobilizing people, will effectively contribute to reducing the overall waste pollution load for the city.”

Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Long - Vice Chairman of Duong To Commune People's Committee - said: Conducting a field survey and then mobilizing people to buy trash cans and keep the environment clean is a very effective model of Suoi Da Hamlet. Protecting the environment is simple, first of all, disposing of trash properly, and people's awareness is very important.

“In the near future, the Commune People's Committee will expand this model to other hamlets, especially Cua Lap and Suoi Lon hamlets - densely populated areas. When implemented, it will reduce the amount of garbage dumped on the roadside, reducing part of the state's investment costs. At the same time, it will also increase people's participation in environmental protection,” Mr. Long emphasized.

Mr. Huynh Van Dinh - Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Phu Quoc City - said: Currently, the total amount of household waste generated is about 220 tons of waste/day, the city has collected about 200 tons/day, reaching about 90%. Of which, many people still collect and burn or dispose of it in public areas such as rivers, canals, vacant lots... causing great difficulties for the cleaning force.
