On the afternoon of July 5, in an exchange with Lao Dong Newspaper, leaders of Hoai Nhon Ward People's Committee (Gia Lai province) said that local authorities had visited and encouraged the family of an 11-year-old boy who drowned in the area.
According to initial information, at about 4 pm on July 4, a group of 6 children including Nguyen Tran V.S. (born 2011), Vo Dinh T. (born 2011), Nguyen Pham G.H. (born 2011), Nguyen Hoang T.N. (born 2015), Nguyen Nhat T. (born 2014), all residing in Truong An neighborhood (Hoai Nhon ward) and Nguyen Tan L. (born 2015, residing in Hoai Nhon Nam ward) invited each other to swim at Hoai Thanh beach.
At about 5:30 pm on the same day, while 5 children were swimming, they were suddenly swept away by the waves. 3 children swam ashore on their own, while Nguyen Nhat T. and Nguyen Tan L. struggled in the middle of the sea because they did not know how to swim.
At this moment, teacher Nguyen Trong H. - a teacher at Hoai Huong Primary School No. 3 (Hoai Nhon Dong ward) - who was walking on the beach discovered the incident. Teacher H. immediately swam out to save Nguyen Nhat T., while Nguyen Tan L. was swept away by the waves and went missing.
At about 8 am on July 5, people discovered L.'s body drifting to the beach in Hoai Nhon Bac ward. After completing the procedures according to regulations, functional forces handed over the victim's body to the family for funeral arrangements.
According to Hoai Nhon Ward People's Committee, L. just finished 5th grade, is in difficult circumstances, orphaned and has lived with her grandmother for many years.
Hoai Nhon Ward People's Committee said it will have a form of commendation for teacher Nguyen Trong H. for his brave action of rushing into the sea to save a student in the incident.
