Great Solidarity Houses add hope of settling down for many poor households

Vinh Long - Great Solidarity houses are helping many poor and disadvantaged households stabilize their lives, adding motivation to rise out of sustainable poverty.

Sewing happiness to poor households

Great Solidarity houses awarded to households with housing difficulties are of profound humanitarian significance, a major program maintained by the Vietnam Fatherland Front for many years. From the joint efforts of the community, many poor and near-poor families have had solid and stable homes.

In Hoa Binh commune, Vinh Long province, Ms. Nguyen Thi Het and her husband have lived in a dilapidated leaf hut temporarily built on the land of a philanthropist who let them stay for many years. In their 70s, both are suffering from many illnesses, their health has declined, and their lives depend on the meager money they earn every day.

Ms. Het said that she suffers from high blood pressure and physical weakness after many years of working as a hired laborer to earn a living. Previously, despite her old age, she still worked as a hired weeding worker, picked fruit for hire, and collected scraps around the neighborhood to have money to buy rice and medicine.

In recent years, her health has gradually weakened, causing her to only grow a few vegetables around the house to sell to make ends meet. "On days when she sells, she has 10,000 - 30,000 VND enough to buy a little rice, a bottle of fish sauce. Some days when vegetables wither and no one buys them, the couple has to eat cold rice for a meal," Mrs. Het said sadly.

After many years of living in temporary conditions, Ms. Het and her husband have just been supported with a new, more spacious Great Solidarity house. "Having a solid roof to shelter from the sun and rain in my old age is a great joy that my husband and I have never thought of," Ms. Het said emotionally.

Also in Hoa Binh commune, the family of Mr. Nguyen Van Binh and Ms. Tran Ngoc Anh used to live in a temporary house built on a small piece of land for more than 5 years. According to Ms. Anh, every time it rains heavily, water leaks everywhere, things have to be temporarily covered; and on sunny days, the house is hot and stuffy.

Prolonged difficult life makes it impossible for the family to build a new house. Receiving support funds from the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province, Ms. Anh and her husband were very touched. According to her, working their whole lives, they are not sure to build a decent house, so the family borrowed more from relatives to build a more spacious home.

The Great Solidarity house awarding program is very meaningful for poor households like my family. Having a new solid house, my family is more assured of doing business and stabilizing their lives. I hope there will be more difficult circumstances supported to settle down and rise out of poverty," Ms. Anh shared.

Supporting people to stabilize their lives

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Ta Thi Nhuan - Standing Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hoa Binh commune said that from the beginning of 2026 to now, the locality has focused on implementing a program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses for poor households, near-poor households and households in difficult housing circumstances in the area.

According to Ms. Nhuan, through reviewing and mobilizing support resources, Hoa Binh commune has completed the construction of 6 Great Solidarity houses for difficult households with a total cost of 430 million VND. The new houses not only help people stabilize their lives but also create motivation for families to feel secure in working and producing, gradually rising out of poverty.

Currently, the locality still has 168 households with particularly difficult housing circumstances that need to continue to be concerned and supported in the coming time. The Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune will continue to coordinate with departments and mass organizations to review each specific case to have appropriate solutions, striving to complete the goal of eliminating temporary houses, with the spirit of not leaving any people in difficulty behind.

In the first 3 months of 2026 alone, the Vietnam Fatherland Front at all levels continued to mobilize the construction of 243 new Great Solidarity houses worth more than 15 billion VND. New homes are continuing to ignite joy in settling down and hope for a better life for many families in difficult circumstances.
