On April 8, the Office of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province sent a document to the People's Committee of Quang Ninh commune regarding the handling of the fire situation at the landfill in the area that Lao Dong Newspaper had previously reported.
Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee requests Quang Ninh Commune People's Committee to preside over and coordinate with departments, branches and related units to urgently deploy a plan to thoroughly handle the fire, not to let prolonged environmental pollution occur. At the same time, the locality must report the implementation results to the Provincial People's Committee before April 13, 2026.
On the same day, Mr. Tran Xuan Tinh - Chairman of Quang Ninh Commune People's Committee confirmed that the locality is coordinating with functional agencies to implement fire handling measures at the centralized landfill. Currently, local forces have mobilized trucks to transport soil, combined with excavators to level and cover the fire areas to control the fire. Firefighting work is being carried out urgently.
Previously, on April 7, Lao Dong Newspaper had an article reflecting the situation of a concentrated landfill in Quang Ninh commune burning for a long time, causing environmental pollution and affecting the lives of people about 1km away.
According to records at the scene, the fire did not break out into a large fire but smoldered under thick layers of garbage, creating thick black smoke. Smoke and the pungent smell from garbage, especially plastic and nylon, spread to the surrounding area, making the air suffocating.
Notably, the smoke under the surface made firefighting work difficult. When the upper layer of garbage was treated, the fires underneath continued to arise, prolonging the recovery time.
In addition, at a time when the fire has not been completely extinguished, garbage dumping activities still take place, increasing the risk of fire spreading and making the pollution situation more complicated.
The landfill is located about 400m from the Bung - Van Ninh expressway. In conditions of strong winds, smoke from the fire may spread to the traffic area, potentially affecting the visibility of vehicles.
Faced with this situation, local authorities have reported and coordinated with functional forces, including the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the Fire and Rescue Police Department of the Provincial Police, to inspect, evaluate and propose appropriate handling solutions.
According to the leader of Quang Ninh commune, the cause of the fire is being verified, possibly related to flammable objects mixed in waste.
