Storm No. 3 Yagi is approaching super typhoon level and is forecast to have a strong impact on both sea and land weather. According to Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam - Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, General Department of Hydro-Meteorology, around September 6 - when storm No. 3 is still quite far from Vietnam's mainland (about 400 - 500km away), the Northeast region is likely to experience thunderstorms.
"When the storm passes Hainan Island and enters the Gulf of Tonkin, from September 7, the entire Northeast region and the North Central provinces will experience heavy to very heavy rain. In particular, the coastal areas of the provinces from Quang Binh, Quang Ninh to Nghe An will experience, in addition to rain, strong winds. In particular, the provinces of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh are the areas with the most heavy rain and strong winds," said Mr. Lam.
According to forecast data from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from around the night of September 6 to the morning of September 9, the Northern and North Central regions are likely to experience widespread heavy rain with total rainfall ranging from 100 - 300mm, with some places over 500mm.
Meanwhile, at present, the mainland of Vietnam in the Northern and North Central regions has hot and humid weather with high temperatures.
"High temperatures do not affect the storm scenario No. 3. What we are concerned about is that the current hot and humid conditions, when they turn into thunderstorms before the storm, could easily lead to the risk of more dangerous thunderstorms and lightning," Mr. Lam analyzed.
Regarding the capital Hanoi, Mr. Dinh Huu Duong - Head of the Forecast Department of the Northern Delta and Midlands Hydrometeorological Station - said that from September 7, Hanoi is expected to begin to be affected by storm No. 3. The wind will gradually increase to level 5, level 6 and the strongest is level 7, gusting to level 9.
"A heavy rainstorm will appear around September 7-8, but before that there may have been sudden strong thunderstorms due to the influence of the storm's circulation. The rain will also be concentrated in a short period of time, which is likely to cause flooding in the inner city and low-lying areas in the suburbs," said Mr. Duong.
According to Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam, recently, the Northern region has had a lot of rain, especially in the midlands and mountainous areas.
"This storm No. 3 will cause a heavy rainstorm in a period of only about 24 to 36 hours. Heavy rainfall and short duration of rain will lead to the risk of flash floods and landslides, especially for provinces in the midlands and mountainous areas. As for the plains, including coastal areas, there is a high risk of flooding" - Mr. Lam warned.
