Ms. Le Thi Hong Van, Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that from tonight (August 17), the tropical convergence zone with its axis passing through the Northern and North Central regions is the cause of widespread heavy rain for the Northern provinces and North Quang Tri in the coming days.

From the night of August 17 - morning of August 20, the heavy rain area will be concentrated in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa to northern Quang Tri with rain concentrated in the afternoon and night" - Ms. Van said.
According to Ms. Van, on August 20-21, the heavy rain area will gradually decrease in the northern mountainous areas of the Northern region, continue to move south and concentrate in the provinces of the Northern Delta, more in the Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh and northern Quang Tri areas.
The total rainfall for the whole period from the night of August 17 to the end of August 21 in Lai Chau, Dien Bien, northern Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Lang Son provinces, is commonly from 100 - 200mm/period, locally over 300mm/period. The remaining provinces and cities of the Northern region, Thanh Hoa area to northern Quang Tri have rainfall of 150 - 300mm/period, locally over 450mm/period. Warning of the risk of heavy rain with rainfall greater than 100mm within 3 hours" - Ms. Van provided information forecasting the diễn biến of heavy rain.
Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas, urban and industrial areas; flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes.
Due to the influence of the tropical convergence zone in the northern area of the East Sea, the sea area from Quang Ninh - Quang Tri in the coming days will experience showers and strong thunderstorms, bad weather, affecting the activities of ships and boats at sea" - Ms. Van advised.
In addition, in the afternoon and night of August 17, the Central Highlands and Southern regions will have showers and scattered thunderstorms with rainfall of 15 - 30mm, locally heavy rain over 60mm.
Previously, the weather trend forecast for the next month, the total rainfall in the period from August 11 - September 10, 2026 in the Northern region, provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue and the Central Highlands region is 5-25% higher than the multi-year average of the same period.
In which, the area from Thanh Hoa to Hue city is 20 - 40% higher than the multi-year average. The remaining areas have a common total rainfall lower than the multi-year average by 10 - 30%, in some places lower.
Widespread heavy rain will mainly concentrate in the Northern region and provinces from Thanh Hoa - Quang Tri. The Central Highlands and Southern regions will experience showers and thunderstorms for many days, especially the Central Highlands region will have moderate to heavy rain during the day, with rain concentrated in the afternoon and night.
Dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind are likely to continue to appear nationwide, concentrated more in the Northern region, from Thanh Hoa - Quang Tri, Central Highlands and Southern regions.
