Although it is the peak of June - the hottest month in the North, recently, this area has continuously welcomed thunderstorms. In particular, some rains have been extreme. In the face of the upcoming increase in rain forecast in the North, the reporter had an interview with Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, to assess the upcoming rain.
Sir, how does the national meteorological agency forecast the development of the upcoming heavy rain in the North? What is the cause of this very heavy rain, sir?
- Heavy rain is still occurring in the Northern provinces. This rain has lasted from the evening and night of June 26 until now. From the night of June 28, the rain tends to increase and last continuously until July 2.
We estimate that the total rainfall in this heavy rain will generally be from 100 to 300 mm and locally over 500 mm.
The cause of this heavy rain is determined to be that the low pressure trough with an axis passing through the Northern region tends to operate more strongly in the coming days. In addition, on this low trough there is a low-lying area in the Northern region, operating at an altitude of 3000 to 5,000 meters.
Low tornadoes combined with the impact of low troughs create a large amount of moisture in the Northern region - which is the direct cause of heavy rain in the Northern region in the coming days.

With the forecast rainfall of over 500mm in some places, is this rain likely to surpass the record in some localities such as in the first half of June, sir?
- Total rainfall is generally from 100 to 300 mm, lasting from the night of June 28 to July 2 (ie about 5 days). It can be considered that the total rainfall is large, but divided equally, it is not too large. Total local rainfall in some places may reach 500 mm, compared to the rains in early June, which is not particularly large.
We believe that the total rainfall of 500 mm is not considered a record rain.
With the forecast of prolonged heavy rain, what recommendations do you have for the people?
- The focus area of heavy rain is still concentrated in the North. In recent times, this area has continuously experienced widespread and prolonged rain with a total rainfall higher than the average of many years.
In the coming days, this area will continue to have moderate to heavy rain over a wide area with a long period of rain. In particular, there may be high-intensity rainfall points, the rainfall may be greater than 100 mm within three hours.
We still note that the most dangerous phenomenon that can cause damage to people and property is flash floods and landslides in the mountainous and midland areas of the North. In addition, the risk of urban flooding may also occur in the coming days.
Sincerely thank you!
