According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the North and Central regions are about to face a widespread rainstorm due to the impact of cold air compressing the low pressure trough.
The midlands and deltas of the North from the night of May 9 to the night of May 10 are forecast to experience moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall of 30 - 70mm, some places over 150mm.
The mountainous areas of the North will have showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with rainfall of 20 - 40mm, some places over 80mm.
The North Central region from the night of May 9 to May 11 is forecast to have a period of moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall of 40 - 90mm, some places over 150mm.
The meteorological agency warns of the risk of heavy rain (rainfall greater than 100mm within 6 hours). During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
The meteorological agency warns that the risk of natural disasters due to heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning, and hail is level 1.
According to Mr. Mai Van Khiem - Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (Department of Hydro-Meteorology), the North is still in the changing seasons, when there is a conflict between the weak cold air mass from the north and the hot air mass.
"The conflict between these air masses makes the atmosphere unstable, easily accompanied by strong thunderstorms accompanied by gusts of wind, lightning, and hail. One of the characteristics of thunderstorms during the changing seasons is their rapid development, often occurring in a narrow range but with high intensity; related to the risk of flash floods and landslides" - Mr. Khiem analyzed.
A representative of the meteorological agency recommended that people should closely monitor the weather warning bulletin to be on guard and have timely prevention plans.
