Over the past 35 years (from 1990 to 2024), Hanoi had 7 years with extremely cold weather on the first day of Tet (temperature below 13 degrees Celsius): 1993, 1995, 1996, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2012.
The severe cold spells were concentrated in the period from 2013 onwards. The Lunar New Year 2025 is approaching. This year, cadres, civil servants, public employees and workers of administrative agencies, public service agencies, political organizations, and socio-political organizations will have a day off from Saturday, January 25 (ie December 26, Giap Thin year) to February 2 (ie January 5, At Ty year).
According to the meteorological agency, on average, during the period from January 25 to February 2, there were about 3.8 days of severe cold.
According to Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the weather forecast for Lunar New Year 2025 will be affected by a cold air mass from around January 26, 2025 (December 27).
"Compared to last year, the weather of Lunar New Year 2025 in the North is characterized by quite deep cold and possibly light rain and drizzle. The Central provinces will have light rain. This year, the rain in the Central region is not as heavy as last year. As for the South, this year there will be no possibility of heat like last year" - Mr. Lam compared the weather of Tet 2025 with Tet 2024.
One of the reasons why Tet 2025 tends to be cold is because this period is still in the peak of the winter season.
Commenting on the development of cold air from now until the end of winter, according to Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, severe cold will still occur around January and February 2025.
"The peak of severe cold will fall in the second half of January and the first half of February this year. And from around the second half of February, the possibility of severe cold will gradually decrease," said Mr. Lam.
